Default 331 cu in shorblock

A few pics of my 331 cu in shorblock for my 65 Mustang Vintage race car........about 13 to 1 compression,will be topped with a highly modified set of Edelbrock RPM Performer heads and uses a .588 lift/288 duration solid roller cam,Edlebrock Victor single plane intake........

Engine should be ready for the dyno by this weekend,I hope,if all the little odds and ends get here............

David,

It is looking good. What horsepower are you shooting for? I remember having a 427 tunnelport with 13:1 compression once. Man, did that thing ever blow all to pieces when it went. All I could salvage and sell was the intake and dual 4s.

Dave,
That should be a real screamer. One of the guys that runs with us occasionally has a GT350 with I think 14-1 cr and it is one of the loudest cars I have ever heard. You are running open pipes I hope?

BTW, I hope your gonna O ring the heads.

Ron;

Will be pleased with 450hp at the crank,but should be a little more........ I bought the heads/intake from another vintage racer(actually traded him a truck load of old Mustang parts I had collected over the years that I did not need),using a new solid roller cam of the same specs as he did,the only difference is he had a Callies crank and some lighter weight pistons,same rods and carb,his dyno sheet showed 490hp at around 7000 rpms if I remember correctly...He's running a different Vintage Series now,they have to run stock stroke and factory iron heads made no later than 1972......so I basically bought the top end of his motor,built my own bottom end........he ran this set-up three or four seasons with no problems,only changing the rings and bearings every other season.....hope this motor can stay together and last as good as it did with him........

Cranky;

Defintely open pipes (only way to go ) X-crossover,3 inch pipes and 2.5 inch tail pipes coming out in front of the rear tires.......I asked about 0-ringing the heads and they told me not needed with top-of-the-line head gaskets.......hope nothing blows,have a stud girdle on the bottom and Canton 9 quart road racing pan with the four trap doors and oil cooler built in a griffin radiator,four speed close ratio toploader,9" rear with 3.70 gears,have another center section with 3.50 gears,both with Detroit Lockers..........

Plan to shift at 6000 rpms and might see 6500 to 6800 in high gear on a few long straights,7000 rpm chip in the MSD box.....fourth gear at 6500 rpms calculates out to 135 mph with a 3.70 gear and my road racing tires,plenty fast enough for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hope to start racing in about a month or two,plenty of races scheduled around here..........next is get my 8-point roll cage put in and certified,then put my front and rear racing suspension on,drop in the motor/trans. and ready to go racing,can't wait,have one compettion license already and working on another...........

David (future road racer extraordinar )

Bernie;

My buddy/engine builder says he expects a lot closer to 500 than 450 also.........I'd be reallllll happy with anything over 450 hp,right now I'm looking for a good dependable engine to give me a couple of years of service while I learn the tracks and driving technique for wheel to wheel vintage racing..........450hp seems to be what I would need to be competitive at the tracks I plan to run this year and next year.........after that, I hope to "step it up a little" with another motor,and hope to run a vintage race or two at Daytona some day........just something to tell my grand kids about in my old age when we are watching the Daytona 500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

had a few parts on backorder,so it looks like my engine will not be finished for another week or two,then off to the dyno,I'll post the dyno results when we get it there........

Just an update,finally after many set-backs the motor is 99% complete and now at home in my shop,this weekend I hope to finish up the fuel lines and few little odds and ends and hopefully in the next week or two get it on a dyno..............sure will be glad when it's in the car running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David
