427W build/charge
So, I am building my 351W into a 427W. Now, what I would like to know is, can a block like that handle a turbo/supercharger or both? Also, if the engine CAN handle being charged, how much boost could it sustain?

I'm sure it can handle it , as long is if it's built correctly for it. Like a good crank and rods and forged pistons. Compression ratio needs to be around 8.5-1. How much boost it can handle depends on how well the engine is built. I 'm not an expert but an average amount of boost is around 8 to 9 lbs. Higher amounts of boost can be achieved by o-ringing the heads. Talk directly to whom you're buying tho stroker kit from, they'ii let you know what's best. I think maybe a 398 or a 408 ci might be a better choice.
Hope this helps....
Tim

I would assume to figure out how well the engine is built, I would have to get it sonic tested by a machine shop, or how would I do that?

Yes, it would definitly have to be sonic tested and magnifluxed and whatever other tests your machine shop does. You have to do all those tests no mater what you're building the engine for. When I say "how well the engine is built", I mean internally. But a block must be checked closley for it's integrity befor ANY build.

With a girdle and proper machine work you can run about 700 hp if you are not detonating. Any higher and you will need to get an aftermarket block. The problem is that the bottom end of the block cracks much above 700.

What do you mean by "detonating?" How does that differ from combusting?

Detination or pre-ignition is very hard on an engine. You may have the fuel igniting before it is suppose to or not igniting properly which will hammer the bearings, try to turn the crank backwards or crack the block. This is more commen on engines that have forced induction because of the air going into engine and the engine not being properly tuned. The 351W blocks are prone to crack in the mains with to much power or detination. I do not like to run them much above 600HP. The girdle will help a little on the bottem end. The weight of the parts used, compression, crank stroke and rpm will all affect the life of the block. The early blocks seem to be stronger than the later blocks. Good luck, Keith Craft
