CA emissions: smog equipement research
Where is a good resource for researching the CA emissions equipment for vintage engines? I'm particularly interested in understanding any emissions equipment for 1965 - 1970 Ford 289 and 302 engines.
Anyone have a good source for this info?

Roush is working on a "CA Smog Version" of their 351w based 402R. You could give them a call to see what components they might have, but I think for the most part it's cam and carb. Knocks the HP down quite a bit, but still makes "decent" torque for a smog motor. Todd Andrews at Roush may be able to at least give you some leads...

I think, if I'm not wrong, that DD is talking about something online that maybe we can download or read which shows 60's emissions standards & standard equipment on californian cars of each year. I myself would love to see this info without the hassle of visiting a government office during my busy day. If possible

Pirate is correct. My objective is to build an engine using a vintage block that will satisfy my needs for horsepower without violating the emission standards for that year block.
I currently am assessing which year block I need to use to keep the equipment requirements simple.
I have heard that I need a pre-1970 block, but then later read that I needed a pre-1968. BUT, even those years had some equipment requirements.
I also don't want to put in a hot cam only to find that I need to tear my engine apart to replace it with a lesser cam. A kind of "measure twice, cut once" approach to CA emissions requirements on Cobras.
I think the CA Bureau of Automotive Repair is a good lead. I'll try to chase something out there, and see what I come up with. Any other suggestions are welcome.

NJ Emissions requirements by engine year
I have been trying to find out what year block I have to use in order to stay relatively emissions free. I want to use a ford 385 series block 460 and I would like to know what the emission requirements are by the year of the motor for my state.There seems to be a lot of 71 and up blocks D1VE for example but my engine identification material says D1 blocks are 1971 and up. So , would this be identified as a 1971 block for inspection? When did emissions get tough in NJ in the 70's?Does anyone have a breakdown on this? Thanks

1965 or earlier....this is before the thermactor (sp) and the air pumps which appeared in 68 I think.
With a pre-1965 block, you aviod all that extra gear. Your only requirement might be a PCV valve. However your engine still might not pass SMOG if it runs too much cam/carb.

Actually air pumps appeared on small block Fords sold in California in 1966.

I found all the answers on smog crap from the machince shop that built my engine. You may be surprised how much they know about it. Good luck.

A "Motor" or "Chilton's" manual for the year engine you have should also list all of the smog equipment that was required for that engine. Except in California where 1966-1971 engines were required to have aftermarket NOx reduction devices installed (not sure if these are still required or not). Years ago all local librarys used to have these manuals available for lend.
