289 Shelby Cobra Bellhousing

At first read i though i had found the elusive "Cobra" Bellhousing which I believe does exist, Right!? But after asking a question & recieveing some pictures I was sure I hadn't... What i have is in far better condition & has exactly the same markings, casting & numberssssssss........ Tell me your thoughts....

Cast steel "COBRA" lettered bell housings were made for five bolt 260/289 engines, a second version for six bolt 289 engines, and a third for 427 Cobras. The five bolt 260/289 design has not been reproduced as far as I know. The six bolt design for 289s has been reproduced twice, two different people, I believe. The 427 one (I think will fit any "FE Family" 310, 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428 engine) has been reproduced at least one time. The five bolt 260/289 Windsor and 427 FE models were designed for Cobra and 427 Cobra chassis’s respectively. I removed an aftermarket formed steel “scattershield” from one Cobra and one 427 Cobra that were both butchered to extents I doubt how well they would have contained any degree of clutch or flywheel failure. Whoever installed the aftermarket units cut out significant portions of the assemblies with torches to gain frame clearance.

The five bolt 260/289 Windsor ones show up for sale a few times a year. These days the market for five bolt units is mainly just the few HP289 powered Fairlanes still intact, some early Mustangs, and 260/289 powered original Cobras.

The six bolt units, originals or copies, don’t seem to come up for sale very often as they will fit the entire six bolt 289/302 Windsor family engines.

The 427 Cobra ones in original form are extremely rare; copies are offered for sale occasionally.

I would much rather have that than run the aluminum.

I have run across three or four of the small block bell housing with the COBRA logo on them,not sure if they were original or repros.........Could have bought one for 50 bucks,but did not need it or think it was original so I passed on the sale.........maybe I should have bought it anyway................

About 2-3 months ago, I purchased the last 6 bolt Cobra Bellhousing that Tony Branda had. It is indistinguishable from the originals. If you are looking for one, Jim Cowles of Shelby Parts & Restorations has two sitting on his shelf. They are not cheap. I paid $650 for mine. Fran Kress also has 2 if I am not mistaken. Given that these may be the last 4 unused Repros, expect to pay $750-$1000 for one. I you need add'l info, please feel free to email me.

Btw, the one on ebay appears to be aluminum. The Cobra scattershields (both 5 and 6 bolt) are cast iron. The 6 bolt ones have "COBRA" spelled out on the top, WEDGE on the bottom and say NHRA Appr on one side, and going from memory 289H-5 on the other or something like that.

wow! that's pretty steep! I'm assuming since they are repos that they are all 6bolt? i need a 5 bolt... & yes I had been discussing this off line with a couple people. The one I have is also aluminum(same exact as the one on ebay, #s & all). would love to find one of the cast steel "cobra" ones though!

The one on ebay is alum. I saw that one too. I managed to get my 5 bolt, Wedge Co Scattershield on ebay for $72. Yep. Not a typo. The guy had it listed for a dodge or mopar or something since it had Wedge cast into it. Wedge made them for Ford. Mine is identical to the COBRA unit except mine doesn't say COBRA. It has the NHRA APP cast into it though.

We finally installed my C.I. Belhousing last Summer. I say we, A few of the Green Mountain Cobra guys & myself. Mine Being a 5 Bolt, rare & extremely overpriced, I found an ANSEN HRA Bellhousing. It must have originally come with a Spacer between the upper bellhousing & the lower inspection cover. That or the flywheels back then weren't as thick out near the ring gear. We had to do some grinding to get the inspection cover to clear. Once I got her home I built a makeshift spacer, about 1/8" thickness. The mounting surface(lower face of bellhousing) was angled so that a spacer shifted the cover forward, just enough. PITA but, at about 1/4 of the price, It worked out just fine & looks great sitting in there. I saw an original comp cobra, recently, that had an Aluminum bellhousing. Do I get points for this???!
