Exclamation Pedestal vs Stud Mtd Rockers

Hello all,
Is there any advantage to using one of the above types over the other? I'm looking at a set of AFR165's with pedestal mtg.
Thanks,
John

Pedestal or bolt down are not adjustable. If you want to change cams to a solid or roller you will have to modify the heads and change to the stud type.

Pedestal are the type that come on the Ford GT40 and stock Mustang heads.

Stud mounted rockers screw into the head whereas pedestal mounts are pressed in. The stud mount rockers allow for a stiffer valve springs that you would want if you have an application where your spring open pressures exceed 280# (e.g., a bigger cam or a roller cam). This would cause a pressed-in stud to work lose, which is a bad thing. You want a stud that screws in. You can get 3/8 or 7/16 inch studs. Get the 7/16 studs as they are stronger. The price of the roller rockers will be the same.

If you are yet to purchase the heads the screw in stud mount are the better option as it will allow you to have adjustable rocker arms regardless of whether you decide on hydraulic roller or flat tappet cam. The pedestal type are going to dictate the "stock" type rocker arms. However if you are able to incorporate a shaft mounted rocker arm set up that is the best available ($$). There are several makers of them and they will fit nicely and eliminate a lot of "monkey motion" in the valve train. The advent of shaft mounted rockers was one of the single biggest improvement that the "Winston (forget Nextel) Cup" engine builders came upon. It allowed an immediate increase in RPM and helped the valvetrain stability considerably. It just depends on what your budget is.
"Straight" Screw in studs with good poly locks will serve you nicely. Look at ARP's products.
