Paint block or have it machined first?
Hi guys, I have my 351W block here. It's been cleaned, old bearings and plugs are out. I also have a POR-15 kit ready to paint it.
Should I paint it first? Or send it back to be bored/decked/new bearings/plugs first?

You have to have it machined first. When they bore them and deck them, they will hot tank it afterwards to clean everything up. The POR would be no match for hot caustic acid.

You have an option here.
If you plan to polish the valley and improve oil return, do it NOW.
If you plan to open up any areas or put restrictors in, do it NOW.
If you plan to polish or smooth the block, do it NOW.
Anything you want to do to the metal, do it NOW.
After it comes back, all shinny and new looking, then you can tape off things and paint to the cows come home ( or sooner ).
If you remove all of the bumps and casting trash from the outside, the paint will be smooth and shinny and look like it was dipped in plastic...if that's what you want.

Make SURE you mask off everything you don't want paint on. I won't tell you why I know that.

Good advice, thanks. I'll have a look at it today and see how rusty or pitted it is. I won't be polishing the valley or doing anything fancy, but if I need to remove any bad rust or casting material, I'll do that first.

When they hot tank it, they'll probably bake it or media blast it also....good machine shops will do that. If so, the block will look like it was shipped from the foundry.
No need in cleaning off rust.....
