Fuel Pump - Need a regulator
First, thanks guys for the help with the Victor Jr intake question. Much appreciated.
I need some advice on my fuel delivery situation. I'm in the process of upgrading to AFR 185 heads from the GT-40x (392 FRP crate engine), and was wondering if I'll run into fuel problems. I now have a Carter mechanical fuel pump, and my friend who's helping me with this (he's actually walking me through it step by step) strongly suggested I use a fuel pressure regulator. I'm using AN -8 throughout my fuel system and fuel is being delivered by a Jet Performance stage III modified Holly DP 750. Currently I'm jetted at 72's, front and rear.
On a side note, I was reading last night in a Ford performance book where they suggested AN -10 for anything over 450hp. Will -8 be enough for me? I plan on doing some track events from time to time, etc.

You should be OK with a Carter pump as long as it is not the High Pressure (race?) one. Standard 6lb will be fine without a regulator. -6 hose will work, that is about 3/8" in laymans terms, which is what many of the big block production cars used. If you start actually racing or increasing engine output you will need to step up to 7/16" or 1/2" line from the tank to the fuel pump. An may need to increase pump size too.

I am doing the same thing on a 351/385hp. Xs off and 185s on. Just got my Pro-Systems carb which flows 780+ true. They said 6-7# was just fine and I am -8 also. They also put in different throttle base to accommodate the increase flow for the 185s. Did tell me to check plugs and be prepared to jet up when the heads are switched.

You didn't say which pump you have but, even the Carter Competition Series and Billet Series pumps don't need a regulator. These pumps do have the -10 inlet where the lower series pumps only have 1/4 NPT or stock fittings. If you aren't using a Competition or Billet pump you won't be able to utilize the flow of a -10 line. Your combination shouldn't need it anyway. For track work I would run a fuel pressure gage in the dash. IMO the fuel pressure gage is more important than the tach.

This sounds like what I have. I do, however, have a fuel pressure guage on my fuel log. Should the fuel pressure fluctuate or remain constant? I don't have the engine completely back together yet, and I never noticed the fuel pressure before. We should have all back together this evening.

When I purchased my old car -- it had a new Summit fuel pressure gauge and fuel filter and log feeding a Holley --- be careful -- the gauge blew on way back from our first small 20 mile trip -- could have caused a fire. Replaced with Mr. Gasket liquid filled gauge. No problems.

I am running a carter mechanical pump and I notice my fuel pressure is at 7-8lbs is this high? do I have a bad fuel pump or should I install a pressure regulator? I am having problems with a rich condition with my carbs (I just sent them to Pro Systems)

I ran a Carter Street/Strip pump on my 331. Had some tuning issues and put a gauge on the fuel line......9lbs at idle. Too much.
Installed a regulator.
