Oil Coolers on Street Cars
Rick's post on the thermostat thread brings up a question I've been pondering.
How many of you are running oil coolers on your street driven cars, and does it keep the temperature too low?

I'm adding one this summer. Perma-Cool has a thermostat controlled bypass for their coolers that will bypass the cooler when the oil gets lower that 180 degrees (I think the temp was 180).

Mocal has a sandwich adaptor with built in thermostat. I used one on my B&B and it worked great. It's an easy install if the filter clears the headers.

temp is too low
Guys,
On my car the oil-cooler face is covered with duct tape...for the last 4 years.
It takes forever to get temp above 140 or so...stuck in traffic, on a hot day I see 180-200 occasionally, but as soon as the car is moving it drops back to ~150.
Too low...have been looking at the MOCAL thermostat and pondering a nice clean, "low-flow-obstruction" install...as few bends as possible.
On the track, I still have had no reason to remove the tape from the cooler...haven't run in summer temps +90's at the track, but no problem yet...just the "around town" inablility to heat the oil to a temp that will evaporate the water out of the oil.
I have a 289 stroked to 347 with 10.7/1 comp...an AVAID pan with 10 quarts and aboutr 3/4 qt in the filter, cooler and lines.
Too cold isn't good...
Has anyone seen a remote filter head that incorporates a thermostat?...seems to be a better way than plumbing in a thermostat.

I purchased the Sandwich adapter with the thermostat. It doesn't cool until it reaches temp & I have no clearance issues with a special Wix oil filter. My Cooler , Mocal, is also a bit smaller than the unit supplied by ERA & the ones seen on most of the early comp cars.

Saw this and thought it would be a great alternative.
I've been happy that I added an oil cooler but then this is Arizona.

I use a manually operated by-pass valve. It is integrated into the remote filter mount.
It allows me to proportionally flow as much oil as I want through the cooler. It has -12AN ports for low flow restrictions.
I run -12AN from the engine to the valve/filter. Then -10AN to my oil cooler.
I think my oil temp runs on the cold side most of the time, even wit the oil cooler closed. But when I drive with higher engine revs, say maintained at 3500 and up, the oil temp gets dangerously hot and I need the cooler. At a track event for example.

With the remote oil cooler, it takes a long time for the oil temp to reach operating temp.
During all conditions, the water and oil temps are within 5 ºF of each other.

I simply tape over the cooler. As outside temperatures get warmer or I race the car, I peel off the tape. It's simple, light and doesn't break or leak . . . did I say cheap.

Yeah whats wrong with duct tape?
I did a cad model of a nice form fitting piece of stainless which kind of locked by screws on either side... didn't want to spend $$$ on getting it fabbed up.
In Cali, I haven't seen it run so low I was concerned... I'd be more concerned if that oil never got hot, which it seems to do. What concerned me is my oil pressure, but I have resolved it to my satisfaction through a HV adjustable pressure melling pump.

Bypassed mine on my street driven car 4 yrs ago. It's in there...looks cool but the AN fittings join up under the cowl via a double male connect as one loop. The only difference I noticed were 12 feet less oil line and 3-5psi rise on oil pressure.

During cooler weather I have a piece of plexiglas in front of the cooler. You can't even see it. I also use 5W-30 (rather than 20W-50) since it provides plenty of pressure and flows more easily through all the extra tubing required by the cooler.

Oil / water temperature
Last winter I install a Canton 7qt oil pan and a oil temperature gauge. I have a 5.0 EFI set up. My oil temperature is 180 F and the water is 195 F. I thought the oil temperature should be 20 degrees higher than the water???

I run a Canton Road Race oil pan and a Mocal sandwich type thermostat with -10 oil lines on my 351W. Fortunately, I have enough room to also use the standard oil filter rather than the FL-300 shorty. When the oil temp is below that required to open the thermostat I get 65 lbs. at idle using 10-40. I can tell when the thermostat opens because the pressure then drops to 58 lbs. at idle. I have run this setup for four years now with no concerns. The setup is simple and effective.

Perhaps you guys could educate me a little. What would the acceptable oil temperature during normal driving? As the oil heats up, where would the upper limits of temperature be and when should I be concerned that it is getting hot to the point of damage?
My 396 stroker runs water temp right at 185 degrees and my oil temperature stays about 200 degrees. When I run it hard, the oil temp will creep up to 225 or so. Occasionally I have seen 240. I have the canton, but don't run a cooler at this point. Should I re-connect the cooler ? The temps here in Sac. run 100 degrees + in summer.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Mark!
You are fine. I get those temps all the time too, maybe even a little hotter. Oil should be hotter than water. Oil under 212 is bad. Basic rule is use really good oil. My builder prefers the vr1 valvoline. Has extra stuff in it to lube valvetrain parts too.
As long as the oil is good your engine is good too.
