I too have trouble getting the oil temps high enough with the cooler on a 427SO.
I took a piece of cardboard cut to the exact size of the oiler cooler, fiberglassed over it, with under $10 worth of materials from any marine supply store, painted it black, and attach and remove it with velcro to the front of the cooler.
It's ridiculously simple and works great.

Well Hi Pat.
That jives with what I've been told: 100 degrees C, normal driving; 120 degrees C spirited, and 135 degrees C as a safe upper limit.

Mocal 235 Matrix 16 row w/-10 fittings is the size that Cobra Accessories sells. I got the same size with -12 fittings from Earls.

Ok, so far I'm following the logic of the oil temps.
Here is my problem. My oil cooler is not even connected, and I can't get the oil over 190 even on a 100 degree day. Engine temps never exceed 196, so maybe I need a warmer thermostat ?
FYI, I have a 418 stroker with a canton 8qt pan. Maybe that huge pan bleeds off too much heat ?
At least I can sleep at night knowing my car won't overheat if I get stuck in traffic.

Now I'm looking for a box cutter to slit my wrists..

I was running my car REALLY hard the other day and got the oil temp up to 275-280ish. So, I called my engine man. He said "No Worries". He did say that if I hit 300+ regularly it is time to hook up the cooler.
Apparently cold oil is worse that hot oil.

JBCOBRA, yes!! I amazed with how hot the oil temps can climb if you keep the engine revs up. For me, a quick burst here and there doesn't do much...but if I maintain revs ...say above 3500-4000rpm...I need to keep an eye out on the oil temp becuase it climbs with no signs of stopping. I either change my driving, to keep the revs lower, or turn on the oil cooler.
I've never noticed this with other cars or engines. Is it just me, or just a Windsor thing...or is it because my SPF is the only car that I've ever had with an oil temp gage...?

Oil temp gauges definately come in handy. I know they have saved me $$$ on a variety of cars. Basically, run the heck out it. Just never beat them when they are not fully warmed up. I think that is the worst thing for an engine. I look at that guage more during warmup/putting around.........waiting patiently before I PUT IT TO THE WOOD! LOL
