ground clearance oil pans & bell housing
I'm sure this has been discussed but I can't find the thread.
What oil pan offers the best ground clearance on a 351w? I have the traditional dual sump, and I have a lakewood bell housing. I did see a superformance that the guy took some sort of a saw and lopped off the bottom of the flange to create some clearance.
I'd like to bring the car down a little bit but I'm already dealing with only about 2 inches of clearance.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Depending on how much you want to spend, Armando's Racing Oil Pans have a fairly low clearance. He worked for Aviad for years. I'm very happy with mine on a big block. (about 400.00)

My Milodon sits pretty low also. I't makes me a little uncomfortable. Dry sump would seem the way to go if one had the bucks to spend.

I have a Sperformance (for sale check the Cobras for sale) with 351 W and a Lakewood bellhousing. The car sits lower than normal and I modified the bellhousing. I first aligned all the bottom bolts so their flat sides were parallel to the ground, then I took a air cutoff wheel (please wear safety goggles) and cut off the bottom lip of the bellhousing even with the bottom bolts. As for the oil pan, I am running a Canton pan, but my pan lies a little back from the center of the front wheels so that when I go over a speed bump the front tires lift everything up. This OK for speed bumps, but for road gators (truck retreads on the road) or the man hole covers, its slow down, or say a quick prayer.

I've looked at the Canton road race pan and it has the same depth as the stock 351W pan- 8". In my car it will be below the rails by about 3/4" when I get done, I hope.

On my FFR I am using an oil pan designed by Gordon Levy. It is a road race style holding 8 qts. The pan sits 1/4 inch above the bottom of the main rails.
As I'm changing oil tonight I can measure the pan from the block to the bottom if you wish.

The mildon looks better than a stock pan, I'm terrified of getting stuck having to cross a speed bump someday.
I'd like to take a look at the Gordon Levy pan, if you could measure I'd really appreciate it!
On the bell housing, after it was cut, did it leave a gap, or would a gap be a problem? I guess I could leave a short lip along the bottom if anything.

I really like the looks of the Aviaid pans. If I somehow destroy mine I'd probably go that direction.

I had a crossmember fabricated for mine that is attached to the lower frame rail. It hangs about a 1/2 inch lower than the bottom of the canton pan. Wouldn't want to hit the crossmember, but if I did I would be glad it was that and not the pan. Let's see if I can attach a picture below

Mike, thanks for the measurement on the pan, what I need to do is measure the stock pan and see how much I can gain, or,,, buy a set of SUV tires and wheels for the car!
Nice idea on the crossmember, definitely won't crater the pan with that! Is the crossmember built like that for stability or protection of the pan?

Those are the lines for the hydraulic throwout bearing coming out of the bell housing and draped over the trans. The ends you see are for the reservoir and the bleeder.
