How does this 357W spec sound?
Hi all,
I love this site.
I just dropped the engine between the frame rails and mounted the Hayes Scattershield and TKO 600, basic 10.5 clutch and plate with McLeod Hydraulic throw out bearing (I know, I know, some of you guys out there are not fans of these but I've used these before and had NO problems).
I'm curious about some basic improvements. I know I'll evetually upgrade the heads, but am looking for advice on some of the less expensive items: coil, plug wires, ignition, water and fuel pumps, etc. Any recomendations??
Right now I'm saving for the paint & body work so my budget is kinda tight.
Here's what I have:
74 351 block bored .030" over
28 oz. crank turned .010"
Forged Ford rods (D6AE)
KB Racing pistons
Hastings Moly rings
Clevite 77 bearings
Fel-pro gaskets
Comp Cams Roller Cam -
Hydraulic Roller lifters
Double Roller Cloyes timing chain
hardened pushrods (??? aren't they all?)
Roller tip rockers
Melling oil pump
GT (Mustang) iron heads
Stainless valves - 1.94 / 1.60
Ford Racing Rear sump oilpan
Edelbrock intake
Edelbrock 750cfm carb
Stock Ford fuel pump
Ford Duraspark II distributor
Motorcraft plugs
Motorcraft coil
Double silicone plug wires
Wells F102 ign module

750 carb is too larger for a 351, 600 or 650 would be best.

Duffinator:
Your build and parts list is pretty good overall. The carb is a little large, unless you have a large cam. It will work but will be "soft" until the RPM's get over 3000. A 351 can also use larger intake valves (2.020) if you have a choice. Otherwise you have what appears to be a good solid dependable combination.

Thanks, guys, I'm still quite a newbie and I've found many, many answers here and I've been trying to be a little more active on the site.
Rick I think I'm a little lost when I read my cam card.
Maybe somebody out there would be nice enough to help me with the explanation??? (and if my carb would be too large for this setup)
When it ran on the stand at the builders, it seemed very responsive, tight, had a very lopey sound(i think) for a 351w, and what I ordered. Ipretty comfortable with it but will always listen to a knowledgable second opinion.
Here's what I have:
Part # 35-452-8 Comp Cams
Intake Exhaust
Gross valve lift .544 .544
Duration @ .006 tappet lift
290 290
Valve timing @ .006
Intake 39 BTDC 71
EXH 79 BBDC 31
These specs are for cam installed @106.0 intake center line
Intake Exhaust
Duration @ .050 230 230
lobe lift .3400 .3400
lobe seperation 110.0
Any comments, critiques, suggestions are welcome.
T'anks,

Sounds very similar to my 362... (+.060 351). My cam is .550/.550 280º duration flat tappet, I have AFR 185 heads with upgraded valve springs. I have the RPM Airgap intake as well. I tried a 750HP Holley, idled well, but just seemed "heavy" at lower rpms - I worked with it for awhile, swapping jets, etc.... swapped it for a mighty demon 650, which really woke the engine up! Nice crisp throttle response, very happy with it now... My engine idles best at 18-20º BTDC, had to get a special bushing for my MSD dizzy to limit advance to 36º...

my 302 came with a 750 Edelbrock on it, I switched it out to a 670 Holley, the 750 ran OK, I just liked the looks of a duel inlet Holley, when I was a kid doing the drag racing thing, I always wanted a duel inlet Holley, couldn't afford one back then, I can now, the Street Avenger 670 came ready to run, all I did was install it, the car will lose traction quick, even on dry pavement, so I guess the carb is set right, I am going to get it dyno tuned soon.
