Small Block Fords
What are your opinions on 331 Strokers? I am considing buying either a Dart or World 302 block, and working with a local mechanic to build a stroker (buy the stroker kit, AFR 165 heads), and end up with a real nice motor at around $6,000. Vs buying a 331 stroker from the various builders, who use a standard ford production block, and charge $6500 - $8000. I would like to have the confidence level of having a really strong block, over built for my needs, just in case. Thanks in advance for the comments. Rick

Rick,
I was heading the same direction as you, but local mechanics doing custom engines can get very expensive. I had a std. stroke long block assembly quoted to me for $7600 (yes, LONG block only!)---what I would pay from some of the builders for a complete, running, dyno's engine. Something to be said for guys that have built small Fords before, and/or churning them out in an assembly line. I'm sure some custom configurations are available from Keith Craft and Coast High Performance. Check with them first, before you start shelling out big bucks for a custom engine.
But, hey, if you've got the money to burn...
BTW, if you do a custom engine, go with someone like Gessford that KNOWs Fords.

Have you (or your engine builder) looked at the new Boss 302 block? Sounds rugged.

If you go with an engine builder such as Roush, then they will keep your Ford Sportsman, Boss or Dart block (upgrade) at 327 cubic inches or standard bore, which is something I thought is/was a big plus. At 331 cubic inches, the engine builder is giving the block a .030 overbore, which makes no difference on a Dart block, which offers plenty of material to work with. Also, if you're thinking of a 331, the AFR 185's may be a better choice, but contact AFR for the correct recommendation based on your specs. I found them to very helpful in the past.

ERA,
"I am considing buying either a Dart or World 302 block..."
Thanks for considering our parts. Our 4.030 prepped (#087010-4030) with the small 2.248 journal and splayed nodular caps is $2370. The billet main version is $2655.
If your budget allows, aluminum would be great in the little ERA
