You should be able to tell by looking at the underside of the piston as to it's construction...as should any decent machinist. Unless you are pulling the engine all the way down, those rings should still seal, make sure that the gaps are located correctly. You need to hone the block in order to get the new rings to seat properly, so if it is coming all the way down I would change the rings since it can be honed.
