Default 1993 5.0 Mustang VS. 1994 5.0 Mustang

Can anybody tell me the differance between the 1987-1993 Mustang 5.0
and the 1994-1995 Mustang 5.0 engines. There seems to be a lot of
aftermarket parts for the 1987-1993 engine vs. the 1994-1995 engines.

I'm no authority on the 5.0. Having said that, I am not aware of any difference in the engine itself. 1994 may be the year that the fuel injection went from OBD1 to OBD2 (I hope OBD is the right letters). Anyway the newer EFI has a hole bunch more diagnostic software programmed in, and it is much more difficult to modify.

The 94-95 was the start of the 4.6l engine and had the worst set of heads in the history of the mustang. Stick with an 88-89 stangs they were the best.

I can't remember the exact year of the change (maybe 92-93), but there was a camshaft change that lowered the hp from 225 to 215. However, most anything that works for the Fox chassis stuff will work for the SN95 (pre modular of course) stuff. It should all be interchangeable.

Greg, 96 was the start of the 4.6L engine. 94-95 were still 302's.

I'm sure somebody else knows more about these engines than I do., but off the top of my head:

OBD-II started in 1996. A 94-95 Mustang GT had a 5.0, and no 5.0's came with the OBD-II.

The 94-95 5.0 had a unique upper intake with the the throttle body angled off towards the front of the car. You can use an earlier upper intake with an adaptor, but in a Cobra it doesn't matter. The 94-95 engines had less HP, but I heard that this was totally due to the less aggressive spark curves in the ECM. The 92-95 engines had hypereutectic pistons rather than the forged pistons of the earlier engines. The hypereutectic pistons are supposed to offer better oil control because of tighter fit and less piston slap at startup, but they aren't as strong. All the 5.0's have roller cams. The later engines have a less aggressive lift ramp to help quiet valvetrain noise.

All the 5.0's have low drag rings, and I've seen engines with 100,000 miles on them have no cylinder ridge and still a cross hatch visible. If you're putting it in Cobra, most of the 87-93 stuff will fit.

You are correct on all! And yes Mustangs didn't start the 4.6 mod motor until 1996. It came in two version the base GT 2v version (yuk) and the 4v version which was in the Cobra.
