Edelbrock 1806
Guys, I have the 1806 on an Edelbrock maifold on a '69 302 all built by the Engine Factory in New Jersey. The motor has been in my ERA FIA for 3 years. I've noticed lately that when starting from a complete stop, the motor hesitates & sputters a bit before taking off smoothly. Someone mentioned accelerator pump, I'd like to get your thoughts.......bad news, I'm not a mechanic, but I am handy and would like to learn.......thoughts???

Probably a simple adjustment.
Try richening up the idle adjustment screws, (both of them) about an eighth of a turn. (Counterclockwise)
Assuming the timing is set correctly.
Let us know if this doesn't work. Lots of other things can be done, but they become more complicated.

possibly sounds like timing has shifted say from 10 BTDC to 6 BTDC and you are running on less than optimal base timing.
You may want to check your spark plugs and see if you can tell anything there --maybe you are running too much base fuel.

I don't know much about Edelbrock carbs, but when my old Holleys and Rochesters did that it was usually a problem with the accelerator pump seal.

In my distant past there was a Rochester 2-bbl on a 389" Pontiac...pretty much the same basic design...when the accelerator pump starts to leak the pump shot is too weak...a very easy rebuild as I remember it, the accelerator pump is a vertical plunger, if it has worn out, put in a new one and squirt the rest of the carb clean with cleaner a few times with an aerosol can of Gum-Out or whatever carb cleaner...try not to get it sprayed in your eyes...
Just be careful, get a toothbrush..clean the dirt off the outside of the carb before you take it apart...keep things clean...paper towels, clean dishes and pie tins for screws, etc...if you don't have compressed air use the carb cleaner can to back flush jet passages...
Could be timing, check all that stuff first...inside the distributor cap for deposits, the rotor for wear, bad gaskets on the carb base...but most likely it will be a worn out or damaged accelerator pump.

If the timing has changed a lot, you may have a bad distributor gear, cam gear or chain... not likely, but it could happen...

I run a 1405 on one of my other Holden 308s, Edelbrocks are pretty good out of the box, but like any carb will need tuning to match the needs of the engine.
Can I assume the 1806 is a AVS carb unlike the AFB style of the 1405/1406?
Have you got a "tuning kit"?
My carb is 6 years old and still has a perfect accelerator pump, maybe your carb is a little lean everywhere and now it is showing as the engine carbons up.
