Sucking oil through PCV
Between high vacuum and running synthetic oil, I'm pulling oil through my PCV valve. Does anyone make a filter of some sort that might reduce it a bit? I've got Ford Racing valve covers and the baffle plate has been bent some, but it's still pullling oil.

Tony:
I had the same problem with my Windsor. I returned to using a breather on each valve cover.

I really don't like the idea of not having a PCV valve at all. I think I'll follow the suggestion of placing a clear in-line fuel filter in my PCV-to-Intake tube and see what kind of accumulation I'm actually getting. If it's ugly, I'll install a separator. I would really like to keep the oil in the motor as that Amsoil synthetic is real expensive!

Improve the baffle plate and lift or position the PCV higher above any baffle plate. This may mean getting someone to lathe up a sleeve type extension to enable this. If the PCV is too close to the baffle plate it will simply pull the oil off it, have 'cured' several mustangs etc with 'el cheapo' rocker covers/baffle plates. About 1/2" upward is usually all it takes.

Ther are also different size PCV's. Get a smaller Valve size PCV from your local parts store.Just look at the bottom of them and compare to what you have. Also the baffle is important too. I only have a single palte under the PCV (actually cut from a beer can) and the correct size valve) Works great.

Baffle plate
I had oil being sucked up through the PCV after a rebuild on my 289. The builder had modified the original baffle in the aluminum Cobra valve covers. I completely eliminated the oil consumption by making a baffle with more surface area, keeping it close to the top of the cover, and and using thicker gaskets to give more rocker clearance. The goal is to reduce the atomization of the oil by reducing the air velocity past the plate. That is why the baffle should be bigger. Also if oil is being sprayed up toward the PCV inlet the larger baffle will direct it away. Almost any light gauge sheet metal will work.

Oil separator update
Well, it's been several months since I installed an oil separator in my PCV line and I must say the result has been interesting. I purchased a water separator at Lowe's and mounted in on my firewall near the PCV valve. I changed my oil last weekend and dumped the reservior accumulation in the process. I probably pulled a half pint or so of oil from the glass jar. That's quite a bit of oil to be pumped into my intake manifold. $25 or so for the separator and a bent piece of aluminum for a bracket did the trick. I essentiall wanted to confirm suspicion that a fair amount of oil was getting sucked into the fuel path, so it's confirmed. Probably add some life to the spark plugs.
