Advice for a quiet electric carb fuel pump
As spring comes in and the snow melts, the 347 awakens. The engine was started yesterday, and everything looks good.
As a refinement for this season I thought I'd make the fuel pump a bit more quiet by installing a piece of hose between the pump and the aluminium line that runs the lenght inside the car. Although it sounded promising when the pump was run dry, the enourmous whining and grinding came back as soon as fuel was poured into the tenk once more....
The pump is a Summit 130 gph "racing" unit.
And to be honest, it makes alot of noice. - OK; no sound of it as soon as the throttle is "halfway there and beyond"- but a pain in the ass when in traffic. (Anyone else has the same experience?)
Any reasonably priced less noisy pumps you'd like to suggest?
( The engine sports 4 x IDF's and I use an Aeromotive adjustable regulator with a 1/2" return line, 3/8" supply.)

When you say the fuel line "runs the length inside the car", is the line IN the car or UNDER the car?

MIne's a Holley
I bought it from Summit or JEG's, can't remember. Holley puts out 150GPH max I believe... installed it between the trunk and the seat area, on the frame above the axle. Ran fuel line into a conduit I installed to run above the floorpan to the engine compartment. I never hear it probably because of its location.

Make sure you have rubber isolators on the pump mount or it'll vibrate through the frame.
Either that or take the packing out of your mufflers...

Carter pumps are great for the low noise factor. You only hear the vacuum pump from time to time on this one:

Maniac....as Cashburn said, the Carter HP pump, model P4600HP is pretty quiet compared to the Holley Blue pump it replaced in my car. I've had mine in my SPF 418W for five years now and no problems. Edelbrock has a quiet electric pump they tout as being extremely quiet.

Stay away from the Holley blue pump...not only are they noisy, but very prone to premature failure. Go with a carter pump.

Facet makes a very good and quiet fuel pump. I have Dean Lampe's here at my house but it is a low pressure fuel pump for Webers. Not very noisy at all. In my Cobra I have an Aeroquip that is mounted in the trunk of my car in line with my Fram Fuel Filter. I used a 1/4" rubber cushion between the pump and the frame and I barely hear it.

Follow-up question: Will running a return line from the fuel pressure regulator back to the gas tank help to quiet-down the pump?

I'd vote for the carter as well.. I only hear it when the motors off and I am giving it a second to pressurize the lines to my webers. Once the motor is on you can't hear it at all.. Even at idle.

Jim, yes it will....when you dead-head a pump, it makes them a little noisier. Using a bypass should quiet it down a little.

Two solutions for you:
1) Checkout the Weldon 600-A. This is a very reliable and quiet pump. I've been using one on my Street Vette (blown and injected for several years now)
2) You can use an Aeromotive Inline Pump (Summit AEI-11101) and a fuel pump controller. The controller will slow down/quiet down the pump below 2500 RPM which also extends its life
Both of these pumps will require a regulator and a return line and both should be good for 600+hp.

Hello.
Lot's of options here.. Change of pump is near, but I hope to do one more check before I give this one up.
This setup does have a return- line/ bypass. The pump then runs on full steam at all times. (1/2" return line, 3/8" feed line from/ to regulator).
I did have some particles trapped in my fuel- filter (75? microns) when i opened it, and some of the pump- noice might be caused by trapped debris? I'll open up and inspect when I change my tank..... Have welded one with a catch- tank at the rear/ bottom to be sure the pump get what it need even when tank is 1/4 full.

Consider an in tank pump. I don't know what fuel tank you do have, but if that's an option it would solve a lot of your issues.

If you dont have fuel injection get rid of the stupid non needed noisy prime loosing electric fuel pump and install a mechanical one. the only hitch is you will need an ecentric for the camshaft and possibly a large dowel pin in the camshaft to drive the ecentric.

Mechanic isn't stupid at all. An option to consider.
Is the mech pump OK when you rev the engine to say 8000 rpm?
You'll still need the pressure regulator?
Hmm... Not sure if there's room for one, though.

What model Aeromotive do you have, I have an Aeromotive pump 11213 (I believe)
Mine is noisey when idling but I have not insolated the pump.
But it is a great pump.
