The End of Racelegal in San Diego 2/15/19
Staff, Racers and Supporters:
With heavy heart I report the close of RaceLegal.com. The financial deficit forecast in 2019 renders the program not viable to continue serving our community. This deficit will prevent us from offering a sanctioned venue to re-direct illegal street racers on to our track at SDCCU Stadium.
The 21 years of success is due to the support of San Diego’s infrastructure and the community of San Diego standing together to stop the predictable and preventable tragic loss of young lives due to an illegal street racing crash.
Our mission statement materialized by working together with Law Enforcement, Superior Court, District Attorneys, Probation and offering an alternative to racing on public roads.
I am grateful to California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for awarding seed money in 1997 and a certificate of appreciation for 20 years of service, to San Diego policy makers for supporting and acknowledging the difference RaceLegal makes in our community through Proclamations from the City (October 25, 2002) and County (November 2, 2002) of San Diego as well as letters of support from the offices of Sheriff, City Council and Mayor (2002). With special acknowledgment to Code 4 Racing, The San Diego and Chula Vista Police Departments for their vision in developing Drag-net a specialized illegal street racing task force.
Community synergism in the highest degree allowed our San Diego community to share with many states in our country as well as other countries such as Canada, Turkey, Australia, Japan and Taiwan to name a few on how we achieved the unprecedented result of eliminating needless death due to illegal street racing.
We are very proud of being the first racing venue to offer side by side tracks with independent timing systems in the United States. There are so many to thank for making this effort a success, from the founder to all who championed our mission statement and the staff who worked year around to prevent families from losing a loved one to an illegal street racing crash.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of this movement for 21 years. My hope is that San Diego does not lose the knowledge of how to combat the tragedy of preventable deaths as a result of illegal street racing.
Respectfully,
Lydi
