New to SoCal and Building.

Hey So Cal,
The lady and I just moved to LA and we're looking for a fun project to take on. We decided our project would be to build a replica car. Neither of us have a tremendous amount of auto mechanic experience, but we're both very into the idea and are both very capable engineers . I've done a great deal of research and it seems like the Cobra would be a good starting point due to the overwhelming presence of online support, it's 'relative' expense, and the variety of building kits. Anyway, so here are some questions to people who have done this before if you don't mind?!?

Fist off... Can anybody recommend a kit manufacturer, that doesn't require any fabrication or modification? Right now my forerunner is The ERA Ultimate American Roadster. I've also looked at Factory Five...and B&B.

How much space should I allow for the build. Right now I have a 2 car garage cleared for the project, and if I can avoid it I'm do not plan on buying a donor car if I can avoid it.

What kind of specialty tool investment should I be prepared to make? I have your basic run of the mill tool set in addition to an some air impact tools. Will this require a Engine Crane? Torch?

I'll leave it at that for now... any advice for a new builder would be great. And if you think there's any immediate concerns I should take into account please don't hold back...

You can't go wrong with the ERA (one of the finest) but you will have to wait for it. Check with them for current delivery schedule.
Use the search function here to get info on different vendors/options.
Many local shows/get togethers you can visit in the area to see different makes. Check www.socalcarculture.com and the regional sections of various sites like this one, ffcobra.com and saac.com to find the local events.
Fab work will vary by vendor but they will all have a bit of tweaking and fitting to get everything just right.
Not much investment required on tools unless you want to do some custom work.

I have my Lonestar Classics, I love it of course, but there are so many nice ones out there, everyone is going to have an opinion, and mine required no fabrication, its a really nice solid build. They are all great cars. Cool, no rattling, and a nice sized interior. You are welcome to look at it anytime.

I did not have to purchase any specialty tools. I rented the engine hoist for about $25, I am sure you can borrow one from someone. You do not have to use air tools, I did not even with my air compressor (I just do not like not knowing how much I am torquing). No welder, torch or anything else that would be "special" was required with mine. You just need the basics, but that is another post...

You can PM me, I will tell you were I will be during the weekend if you want to cruise over and take a look-see.

Doug is right though - now is the time to buy - cars (pre-built used or as a kit) have probably never been lower (for the most part). This hobby is getting really hurt by the economy...I love to build, but not everyone share's the passion.

You cannot beat the 7 day home build at $22.5k. Maybe cheaper? Many people have done it...Its on You Tube as well. Many, many rave reviews. Check into it. Best for the guy who wants to be part of a build, have it done quick, can customize it later. Its a pretty interesting concept that more than a few people are doing. Don't take my word for it, many people have done it and love it.

Check it out.

One of the worse things Lonestar is at is MARKETING. It sucks. Computate everything before looking at price...

Good point... and that's what I'm trying to figure out. There's so many kits out there that give you different things it's easy to read the component list and overlook additional parts. I'd like to get a kit that has the maximum amount of parts to complete the project. I'll look into Lonestar again...

7 day build time is pretty sweet too...
