Default SPF Rubber Shift Boot

Replaced my torn original rubber shift boot with a new one from the dealer.
The new one is so tight it pulls the transmission out of gear. Is this normal for new boots or is this the wrong boot? It looks like the old one but the old one never did this even when it was brand spankin.

Hi Jim, same thing happend to me with my shifter boot that i ordered from finishline. It looked the same, but pulled it out of gear, espically 1, 3, and 5.

Had a friend of mine make me one out of leather. $60.00. No more problems.

How well does the opening in the tunnel line up with the shifter? I have seen a few cars with this problem and it was caused by a large mis-match in the shifter centerline and the hole center.. A leather boot will solve the problem.

Default try black tape

My shifter was having the same problem and it was centered in the hole.

Take and wrap about 1/8" of electrical tape around the shifter.
Then pull the shifter boot up so that it pulls the rubber up higher than it wants to be naturally and this works great on mine.
Then ty a black ty wrap over the boot to hold it up over the tape.

Its much harder to explain than to do.

Patrick, those pix remind me of the before and afters for weight loss, tooth whitening, carpet cleaning etc. ads.

Salient detail noted, however.

Y'know... a good wiki would be the tool to hold these many details. I suppose very patient searching would work, as nearly every question I've ever asked has a "last year I..." answer, but even with a lot of skill at using search features I can't often run down the most current, definitive answers. But a wiki... would be a great resource.

Jim, run down to Tognottis and pick one up. About 8.95 and actually fits it. I replaced both my spf shifter boots with it.

I have one on order from FL; according to the tracking info, it should be here before... 2010. If it gives me any trouble I'll look at a generic.

I'd make a leather one but I don't care for the look in this car.

There is a 5.0L mustang leather boot that can be had for little money and you can have retrofit into your ring.

I used it on my 64.5 Convertible. --

I tried a Tognotti's generic first. It did the same thing. That's why I sprang for the forty two dollar Superformance unit.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll try both recommended fixes. If all else fails ... well, I like the smell of leather anyway.

Well patrickt, I thought I was going to owe you a great big thank you for this tip, but it didn't work out that way...

This weekend I replaced the old rubber shifter boot using a new Superformance boot from Olthoff Racing. Like others on this thread, the boot is so stiff that it keeps pulling the lever out of third gear. I pulled up the boot to expand the bellows like in your photo and tied the top tightly with some wire, but it's still popping out of gear. Augh!!

Any ideas? Does anyone sell an original-style shifter boot but in leather or vinyl instead of rubber (these things don't seem to last very long anyways...).

Can you not pull the top ring up over the lip so that the top ring does not touch the ring below it? Your next step is to soften the rubber. One way to do that is put it in a zip lock bag and spray it good with silicone spray and let it soak in for a day or two.

Same problem with my SPF coupe when I replaced the boot. Had the uphostery guy make a leather one and shifts better that it ever did with either rubber boot!

I had the same problem with a Toploader.

I liked the look of the leather boot anyway.
