Softer pipes
Is anyone aware of aftermarket pipes that are quieter than the factory side pipes?
|
Mark, you'll probably snuff out that 427R if you go any quieter than an already quiet factory pipe. My $0.02. Try some 30db foam ear plugs, available in bulk at Home Depot. I never leave the garage without them. Then again, I'm running a custom 3" ID muffler and my car is certainly louder than most.

Mark,
You might want to check in with the folks at Olthoff to see what they would recommend. http://www.olthoffracing.com/ I know that Stephen at Full Throttle has done a lot off different side pipe configurations for SPF cars (I believe he primarily works with Classic Chambered). http://www.fullthrottlereno.com/ http://www.classicchambered.com/classic/purchase.html Like Dean said, you'll trade some performance for quieter pipes, but you may enjoy your car more. |
Hushpower was purchased by Flowmaster and is now a division of Flowmaster. They were recommended to me and I like them a lot. Allegedly, they're quieter and less restrictive. I have no proof.

There was a very long thread about this not very long ago. Had a lot of good data, and solid objective testing, along with some subjective opinions.
I recently removed my stock FFR pipes, and welded in some much longer classic chambered mufflers. I had one side old stock, and one new. I started it for a minute in the garage, and it certainly seemed to be quieter. But only only idled for about a minute in the garage, not a very good test. But I'll get the job done this week end (I hope) and then do some real testing. |
If you want softer pipes, stop taking Viagra! When I am ready to leave a car show every one stands around to hear it start with the loud pipes. You are not one of those who have have a cup holder and a stereo in their Cobra are you????

I was waiting for this...

My car has the auger type inserts, very tolerable at crusising speeds but still roar at wot, they actually increased the hp.

I just finished installing a set of Eric's mufflers. I really like the results. Havn't been for a test drive yet - too cold. But in the driveway they sound great.
You can see more pictures here: http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...red%20Exhaust/ http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...bered3_001.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...bered3_002.jpg I have sound bites from the stock FFR mufflers, but I don't know how to post them. |
I agree that some pipes are too loud at 67 years old i have almost blown out my hearing. My Cobra is loud and fast as is but Cal Cops dont have a sense of humour and its only a matter of time that I will need to quiet my car down. too open pipes over scavange the motor and you end up running lean this is a good way to burn valves and piston tops. Good luck keep it upright. Larry Spillman

I am curious as to what brand/size auger inserts you used and what set up (pipes)you put them in and what kind of power did you pick up. I have a Superformance with 427R that I put new stepped headers 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 and new Howe 3 1/2 ID race mufflers with their race merge collectors. I am putting down 468 rwhp with a junk carb. Next step is to get rid of the 870 Holley Avenger that my dyno guy can't get to run right (will get Pro Systems). I really like the performance and the deep sound of the pipes but they are just insanely too loud (my wife thought I would never say that). I do not want to go to the expense of complete new pipes (just spent a ton on this new set up) so I am looking for some way to quite these down a little. Any thoughts, pics, as to what you did on yours would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Jon |
Vettes have a baffle that opens up at 3000 rpm. You can put the baffles on a switch and open for loud and close for softer. I haven't seen them on a Cobra.
