Default SPF Performance Side Pipe upgrade selection

I have SPF 2423 and the car was constructed with a 351w 385hp crate motor. Great motor but I'm an ole muscle head at heart and I am going for more cubes and power. I have a 408w short block in my den and I've just ordered some Keith Craft signature Brodix heads and some other goodies that should put me 550+ hp at the flywheel. I've read that the factory sidepipes are 1.875 inches in diameter and are not good for anything with approx. 400hp or more. I have purchased the 402 headers to go with the heads but I'm looking to either purchase a new set of sidepipes ready to go or have my sidepipes modified. I know there has been some previous posts but I just want to find sources that can do it all. In other words...ship my sidepipes to a business and they cut, install, weld and jet coat or someone I can call and say bring them on. I would prefer reasonbly priced pipes or mods. Also, if anyone has been through this process what size baffle was used or could recommend...diameter, length, direction of baffle, noise level preferred...loud or quiet, etc. Sound clips would be great also! Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have a brand new set of side pipes that I can have modified from Performance Engineering that will pick up quite a bit of horsepower. They will need to be re-coated after the modification is completed, but I have no use for the pipes. You won't learn anything from sound clips. If you want to know how they sound you really need to hear them in person.

Hard to turn down the free set that Shane offered, but if you want something engineered specifically for performance, pipes that will last forever and look knock out gorgeous, I recommend www.fireflyperformance.com. I love mine

You might want to check with Dan Mroz, he's an SPF owner that also has a chassis dyno. When I talked to him last he indicated that unless you went pretty big that you wouldn't really notice a lot of difference in HP...maybe noise, but HP didn't seem to be impacted until you started getting pretty big. I'd talk with him about what you want to do and whether he feels the modified sidepipes will give the results that their costs justify.
He has run several cars with the stock pipes and modified/stainless ones for comparison, so probably has as much first hand data as anyone.

I have run them on both my 347 and 392 and can say that nothing else I've tried (stock FFR and lobaks) comes even close to the quality appearance and sound!! If you give Georgie a call, perhaps he can provide the answer. My thought would be that he only need change the header to pipe flanging to open up his product to a world of SPFs ...or alternately that they may already be a fit if you run his stainless headers.

Somebody needs to come up with an option for polished ss pipes for Superformance at a reasonable price, ie $1000-$1500.

Classic Chambered is another option for SPF owners. I know that Full Throttle in Reno (SPF installation shop) regularly works with Classic Chambered to design and build side pipes for SPF owners.

About the sound clips. I want to make sure if anything the sound is improved. I'm not fond of the sound of the factory SPF pipes. Like someone has stated in a previous thread 'compressor like.' Yet I don't think I want the car to sound like 1960's glass packs either.

I have the Firefly side pipes, and I know Ron has SBF headers for an SPF, but better confirm they will fit the Brodex bolt pattern.

They are SS, and after 3000 rpm they scream.

I got mine from Full Throttle in Reno. With yours in trade, will run about $1700.

Well worth the difference in sound alone. Doesn't sound like a popcorn machine any longer.

Jim,

Does the coating of the replacement pipes match the quality of the stock SPF pipes? I've got the stock ceramic SPF pipes and they look excellent after 3 years/8K miles.

My question is are they so loud that you need to wear earplugs? I know it sounds cool when you get on it but most of the people I know who actually drive their cars a lot get annoyed after a while when the car is overly loud.

Jim, I appreciate the info. I'll contact Full Throttle tomorrow. In the meantime, does Full Throttle have pipes on the shelf ready to ship and you send them yours in trade or how does the process work? What are the specifics of your pipes and did you have packing or not? I would like the pipes to be louder than my stock pipes. Currently really quiet at idle. It needs to be a little more nasty. By the way, I just do local driving for a few miles at a time. I can't see me ever going on a trip in the roadster. Thanks

In answer to the above three posts.

1. The pipes look just as good as the originals.

2. I have 3 inch inside diameter pipes with no packing. Sounds like a top fuel dragster. Yes, I wear ear plugs. But, damn it sounds good. If you want a little less sound, order them packed and for your engine, go less than 3 inches inside diameter.

3. He usually has them in stock ready to go, but it depends on whether you want a special diameter and packing. Call him and tell him (I think it's Stephen) what you need and tell him to contact you as soon as he has a set made up. He will use someone elses trade in to make you a set. That way, you have no down time. You get his pipes (and they look like brand new) and you ship yours back to him in the box for the next guy. Simple R&R. Or, if you are really set on keeping the same pipes, You will have to send him yours and he will modify them. Down time could easily be a month.

4. Buy the Remflex gaskets and you will only have to tighten those 16 bolts once.

5. Once you do it, you will wonder what took you so long.

And, I thought about trading mine back in and getting the packing, but my wife wouldn't let me. She loves the mean sound.

Jim, great response!!! One more question and I absolutely love the top fueler sound. Are they straight pipe harley davidson loud..louder..quieter. I know there are a few more cubic inches in the Cobra but man some of those Harleys are pretty loud. Do you feel the need to be light on the throttle when the law enforcement is present? Why were you considering packed pipes? Your ears, neighbors, can't carry on a conversation, law enforcement?
