Default How to test drive a SPF Cobra

Greetings,
In the early stages of a Cobra purchase and have settled on Superformance. I'm a current muscle 2 car owner ( 65 GTOs ), but am looking for something a little more spirited to drive. Like many, I've dreamed of a Cobra

Problem is, that while I expect they will be a blast to drive, and they look like it, I've actually never driven or even ridden in a Cobra.

Any recommendations on how I can first test drive a SPF Cobra to see if in fact the experience meets my expectations ? I live in the Northeast ( CT ) to be exact, and it doesn't seem like any SPF dealers close by.

Welcome your advice...

/jim

We (Time Machines) are about a five hour ride from you on the other end of New York. We would be pleased to have you come to drive an SPF MK III.

When test driving, keep it cool! I ALWAYS drive first with a customer and sort of "set the pace"...You are looking for the ride, handling and quality on a test ride. The speed is a function of the powertrain selected. Most people talk big power but drive a car with a Ford 475 HP/495 Torque engine and decide that combo is plenty quick enough.

Bench race your dyno sheets after you have selected a chassis. Keep in mind other variables such as tires, ride height, etc. that will affect your test drive.

You are welcome to call us 716 407 0975 to set up a drive or just to ask questions, we like to talk about cars as much as anyone!

I completely agree with Rick (Mark IV)... go slowly at first and treat the beast with respect or it'll bite you!

That said, I would also highly recommend you bring a camera along for your first test drive and get someone to snap a photo of you at the wheel. That's what I did and I never failed to get a charge from looking at that photo in the intervening years between first drive and first purchase.

Jim....The closest dealer to you is here on Long Island....and you might
want to go to Lime Rock Park on Sunday Sept 5th for the annual car show and you'll see plenty of SPF cobra's along with all the other Cobra manufacturers.

Black Horse Garage in Bridgeport has one for sale you can go test drive: http://www.blackhorsegarage.com/cars...e-cobra-mkiii/

Then come and drive one of ours atleast for comparison sakes. Good luck.

Feel free to send me a private message. I have done tons of research before buying mine and would be happy to share in my findings.

I live an hour from Danbury.... Myself and another guy own a SPF, we are within 5 miles of each other. You can speak with him as well.

I always think about Dean Rozen when he let a guy test drive a S-1 Roadster (The Super Seven knock-off) and the guy crashed breaking Dean's arm.

it's tough to be a dealer eh?

OP, good luck on your hunt.

So now I can go post in the BDR thread? The referral to the used car was OK, the "drive ours" was out of bounds...........

Come on, lighten up. Unless there's reason to be concerned? The man lives in CT, I found him a car of your make he could drive. Least he could do is stop by and say hello.

Guys, thanks for the great advice, recommendations, and very generous offers. I'll be following up for sure; As a reference, here is my current 65 GTO ride. Yes I'm proud of it, but have the itch to add a Cobra to the collection.

Cashburn, no harm no foul here; I took your post in the spirit you meant. I was aware of the nice looking car in Bridgeport. Not sure I'd test drive unless I was seriously considering the purchase of it which I'm not given color.

Hi jr.
You are welcome to try mine "no questions asked"
Here is my usual Cobra driving lesson.
1. Get in and lets adjust the seat
2. See those three pedals down there. Aquaint yourself
3. push in the clutch and row it through the gears.
4. turn key to start
5. Drive around the block a few times, and if you make it back alive I will ride with you!

Easy enough? LOL
JB

The ONE thing you need to learn real fast...before you go real fast is where the pedals are...!!! Really, they are offset ...and of course....don't touch the sidepipe...don't support yourself getting in and out by using the door or the winshield ....I suspect it is unlike anything you have ever driven, at least it was for me and those I let drive it...

Upside down over riders! That's gotta be a first...Too funny. Btw, you can't hammer the pedel like the goat or you'll turn the snake into a top! Very nice pics of the GTO w/tri power.

This was my spf when someone took it for a test drive. Be careful he never exceeded 35mph.

35mph... did he simply lose consciousness due to the excitement? Sorry for your loss. Did you get it fixed/replaced? Hope no one was hurt!
