Default The "right" way to remove speedometer?

Hello All,

I am trying to fix the speedo on my dad's superformance cobra. To give more detail, the odometer and speedo are both out right now and there is a small piece of nylon or plastic that has come out (according to dad) from the back of it. It looks like the end of the speedo cable, but not sure till I pull it out.

Any help would be appreciated, pics would be awesome!

Oh, and I believe they are the "smith" gauges everyone talks about on her. The speedo goes counter clockwise.

okay, I got the speedo out, looks like there is a gear missing where the 90 angle drive is (going into the speedo). Just so happens I found a loose nylon gear behind the driver seat. I figured out the problem, now to see if I can fix it. Thanks anyways guys.

That's the reverser. If you have a Toploader or a Tremec along with your counter-clockwise speedometer, then you have to use a cable reverser on the end of the speedo cable. This is not true if you have a Richmond Gear transmission. Here is a pic of the back of my counter-clockwise Smiths speedo and the reverser (because I have a TKO).

wow! thanks for that picture, your reverser looks much better made then mine. Mine doesn't have the copper caps that yours does. I will post a picture shortly. Apparently my father had Superformance fix this a few times only for it to go bad again, maybe I just need to replace the entire reverse with a better one like yours. Do you have a part # for that? thanks!

Now it's been a while, but I'm pretty sure that's part #BG2410-80 available from Nisonger Instruments. Nisonger Instruments :: the exclusive Smiths U.S. Warranty & Service Center since 1949

Note the part in Patricks picture can be assembled to be a reverser or a 90 adapter. Unscrew the ends and switch them to switch direction. Make sure the inner cables are long enough to stay engaged with the drives.

May want to consider this

speedometer-smooth & accurate.now

after two cable replacements, never been happier.
