Question Muffler rattle?

I have this high pitched, metallic rattle (like a vibrating loose bolt against metal) from the right side when accelerating up through the RPM range. Haven't been able to find anything loose (seat bolts, side-pipe hangers, exhaust system connections, etc.). Almost sounds like the muffler is loose in the side-pipe and rattling.

Any advice?

Thx

Matt

Check your timing. Could be detonation.

A few years back my baffles broke loose inside the pipes, first on one, then the other. Sounded just like you describe. Had to buy new sidepipes from the SPF dealer. Upside was that I was able to have Classic Chambered mufflers welded into the broken sidepipes. Now I have two sets. The stock set is stored for future use.

I think Jim's figured it. I have seen several mufflers crack around the end of the inside. I believe the difference in thermal expansion between the guts and the case causes this. You'll likely find the stock ones are really restrictive and a good muffler replacement like a Classic Chambered will free up quite a few ponies.

You can drill and tap a couple of stainless screws on the lower inside section out of sight. No more rattles and a much cheaper and easier fix

Thanks guys,

All good info. And I will check the timing too, just to be sure.

I'm in exactly the same boat...my intent is to fix/upgrade the broken ones. I was fortunate enough to get a set from another SPF person on this site for cheap to replace the rattling ones.
