Why yes, GM DOES have several plants in South Africa! They don't build Corvettes 'though. And yes, the "legal" thing IS a marketing thing but then so is a Cobra built in Poland
If it's not a hologram, it is "REAL"....... it just isn't "original"..........................

Actually, Kirkham doesn't refer to its car as a Cobra. The SAAC Registry does. But I digress.
We'll have to ask Evan about "real" versus "original."

Shall we place odds on whether the Corvette crowd will poo-poo these fakey doos?
*hat in hand*
My apologies to the OP and subject. It looks like an awesome car. It just may be interesting when a 'licensed Corvette' hits the Corvette crowd.

Of course they will! Just show up at Bloomington and see how warm a welcome you get!
We ALL drive "fakey-doos" unless they came from Thames Ditton or in the case of the 'Vette, Saint Louis.

doesn't take 4 years to redesign a replica car. truthfully, there was ongoing GM lawsuit against superformance and Mongoose.
$100K superformance versus $70K Mongoose roller. Same car except Mongoose is made in USA
all 3 companies, Duntov (they still make street versions), Superformance, Mongoose, are "official GM" vendors.

No, it does NOT take 4 years to redesign a replica, it takes as long as it takes to make it right!
Superformance was "truthfully" NOT part of the Mongoose lawsuit. Superformance has been licensed by GM since 2009 and has never been sued by GM.
A prototype/proof of concept was built and shown in 2010. The decision was then to go forward and revise the chassis and interior. That has been an ongoing project at the factory that was not top priority so it has taken longer than you might have expected.
No, the "Mongoose" car is NOT the same as the Superformance. Obviously the exteriors look the same, the are Grand Sport replicas after all.
How long does it take a Leaf to purchase a Cobra, oh, wait, never mind...................

No, the first I bought brand new and sold to a guy in CA. The second bought off ebay and sold to a guy in CA, third I bought off Cobra Country the next owner still has it.

I have a suspicion the SPF replica will have less rattles, better road manners, faster, better braking than any mid 60 corvette. I see it no different than a restomod.

I think I agree. I'm reminded of the failed attempt to make Eleanor Mustangs - copies of a particularly popular custom car rather than copies of the original that was customized. ... BTW, I have no problem with these Grand Sport replicas. I'm curious to see how many people will want what amounts to a replica of a street legal replica of a non-streetable race car. If I was good at predicting such things, I'd be a lot richer than I am.

I thought Corvettes were built in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

cycleguy55,
From the paragraph on History:
"The first 300 Corvettes were hand built at a plant in Flint, Michigan in 1953. Production was moved the next year to a facility in St. Louis, Missouri and then finally ended up in 1981 at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant."
As the Grand Sport in discussion was from the mid-60s, St. Louis was the correct reference.

These are awesome cars and if I win the lottery I might add one to my impressive collection. (The one I would have after winning the lottery)

I see where the first Grand Sport customer car was delivered at BJ last week. Looked nice in pictures. Looked like the LS engine had trips instead of a efi or Weber setup. ----- Ken

I wonder if they will have one at the Kit Car and Import show at Carlisle this year ? The pictures I have seen so far have a number of changes from the originals in trim , lighting and interior layout gauges etc. I've had a D&D GS for 8 years now. Saw three of the originals back in 1964 after the Nassau race and almost bought the Wintersteen chassis 002 roadster back in 1967. So I am very familiar with the originals. If Duntov had his way back then we would have had 125 Grand Sports running around instead of the 5 that escaped. As originally built they were more street worthy than they ended up after a number of modifications. I built a Comtemporary Cobra back in the mid 80's and enjoyed that for about 8 years. The GS feels similar to the Cobra with abit more driver comfort mainly leg room..
