Hi torque mini starter
Local shop has an early SPF with a 351W/5spd, they are having an issue with the starter and are looking for advice on a hi torque mini starter for this combination. I have not yet seen the car, but believe the starter has a built in solenoid attached.

I personally have a Powermaster but I have heard very good things about these starters:

I was having turning over issues and replaced my stock starter with a Ford Racing Hi Torque Mini starter. It has worked flawless going on 4 seasons now.

I just put this beast of a starter in. I think it will actually move the car if its in gear as it has like 4kw of power. It was not cheap but Jegs has them on sale for about $40 less than I paid.

I would stay away from a starter that is not "clockable" That means it can be spun on the housing to keep the solenoid away from the header on your particular car. Some standard started will heat soak and not start until they cool.

What David said - the newer design of a SBF stock starter with the solenoid on the starter work great. I replaced my expensive Powermaster mini-starter that quit with one from O'Reilly's and it worked better than the Powermaster ever did.

That's what I'v been using for years. Inexpensive, works well, and easily replacable.

Bestest part of all, when I bought 2 of them way back when??? they were 70 bucks a pop!!!!!!!!and lifetime warranty!!!!!!!!!
Been on 2 different cars with 4 different sets of headers and no heat soak or any other problems..........
BTW: some companies like Jegs/Summit advertise this exact same starter as a "Ford MotorSport High Performance" starter @ 200+ bucks.....same exact starter with a different sticker on them,I've had both on my workbench side by side.......

If it has a Quicktime bellhousing, only a few starters will fit. You will need to find that out first.

David Gagnard's post on 5/22/15 was a life-saver for me. The Powermaster Mastertorque starter that came with the Roush 427R (550 HP) engine failed after only 900 original miles. One of the two screws that fastened the face plate to the starter motor stripped upon starting the engine. This caused the motor to shift such that the starter gear would not engage with the flywheel ring gear. As a retired design engineer, I plan to review this failure with Powermaster along with the fact that Powermaster has no distributor in the Phoenix, AZ area--the sixth largest city in the US. I would have to order on-line.
So, I purchased an Ultima Select 32281 starter from my local O'Reilly Auto Parts Store and installed it in just a few minutes. Works great, has nearly the same performance ratings as the Powermaster, and my Backdraft Cobra is back on the road. Thanks David.

I didn't believe it until i matched them side by side in a photo, the Ford Racing Hi Torque mini starter in my post sure looks to be the same as the Ultima Select 32281 and it wasn't cheap. Thanks David for a good find but I'll never need another one.

I have used a Tilton on my last three engines but am having a solenoid problem with the current one. The starter is very powerful but also very expensive ($500) so I might try something else this time. I believe they are all based on Denso internals, both the starter and my Appleton rack and pinion were getting ready to go on vacation in Scottsdale.

The same Ford Motorsport mini-starter I bought at a swap meet many years ago while collecting parts for my Cobra build is still spinning my Cleveland to life after eighteen years of service.
