speedometer (Smiths) gears
My search skills suck, I know I've seen a thread on this. I have a broken gear in the speedo, how many tooth gear do I need? 3.73 gear - 275/60-15. Where do I get one, send speedo - LA area?
Bill

Mine went out last week - first the odometer could not be reset for a bit, then the speedo quit. Took it out and and inspected everything, the Smith's speedo mechanism locked up and took out the nylon gear in the right angle reverse adapter. I called around and had no luck in finding a repair source, several people told me to just replace it so I did. Got another one from Hillbank and is working fine now. If you find a source that repairs these I'd like to know who/where and any cost estimate. Thanks and good luck

The nylon gears are available, my (former - long story, not his fault, my schedule) mechanic received a replacement gear I just do not know where from. He threw it in the trash after my extended absence. He had no interest in starting over, even if I paid him twice.

I've had excellent results with Nisonger. Their gauges carry a 2-year warranty (coded somehow inside the instrument, I'm told). Very helpful guys.

If the gear is inside the speedo, I don't have an answer.
If it's the gear at the end of the speedometer cable that goes into the Tremec transmission, you'll need a 20 tooth gear, Tremec part number C1DZA, color: Black.
Here is a spreadsheet from Tremec that helps you figure it out and the Tremec gear part numbers sheet:

Thank you.
My speedometer is very optimistic..good for the ego but bad for the wallet. One of my winter projects was to figure out which gear I need. This saves me a bunch of searching.
Thanks
Mike

You can order speedo gears from a ford dealer.

That is right, but I believe they have different part numbers. But you can ask to see them and count the teeth.

The Ford Motorsports catologue has everything you need, including the formulas to figure out the color coded gears. $5.00.

Hmmm....I used a pink 19 tooth speedo gear for my Tremec with a 3.73 rear axel ratio. Tossed the mechanical speedo after 3 years for a direct replacement 180 mph reverse electronic speedo. No more gears, no more cables, no more wobbly speedo needle. Just a thought. Bought it from Nisonger for $390.
