Smile Ammeter

I was reading up on why the SPF has all Smiths gauges except the ammeter, which is a Lucas item. Apparently "back in the day" Lucas was the source for ammeters. The Lucas appearance is obviously different than the Smiths gauges, and I never had any use for an ammeter preferring voltage readings to monitor the charging system. So I did some checking and Smiths now makes a Cobra voltmeter gauge which I am going to install in place of the ammeter (of course save the Lucas gauge with other Cobra parts ) and I am posting this information here in case anyone else is interested. The source I found is here http://www.gaugeguys.com/Smiths/Authentic/cobra.htm and I'm sure there are other sources as well. Here is a picture:

I'm going to install the clock instead. Volts are soooooo over-rated.

Seriously, thanks for the link...add another thing to my Christmas list.

Dean, I put a clock in mine. Came with the V bezel and I changed it to match the other gauges. Works cool. Put a swith under the dash to turn it off when the car is stored. Pics in my gallery

I just contacted APT...spoke to a guy named Chuck...and tried to order a voltmeter. Chuck said they had just sold their last one to someone in Des Moines, but he had some on the way in a couple of weeks. He said it should be in my hands before Christmas.

Another "winter project" item for SP00770...

Oh....and it's $62.00 plus $10.00 shipping....

Keep in mind that an ammeter is a much more accurate and simple gauge to tell you if the charging system is working or not. You can have 14.4 volts and not be charging the battery. As long as the Ammeter is on the + side, you're charging the battery. But I suppose non of these gauges are "state of the art" anyway, so have fun. Thanks for the link.
