How much oil pan clearance?
What is typical clearance to have between the road and the oilpan. My car appears to have only about 2 inches between the lowest point of the pan, the drain plug, and the road. Kinda scary:eek:

my lowest point on 156 is the bellhousing and it is 3-1/2 " ground clearance ...anything less would really bother me . as it is , i dodge road kill, look for debris in center of the road to avoid, take speed bumps and rr tracks slow and at a 45 degree angle . 2" seem awfully low . what style/brand oil pan do you have ? Can you describe your pan? Until about 2005, FRPP was selling BB Crates with an un-baffled pan that was only meant for shipping. Around 2005 they started offering the crate motors with pan very similar to Canton's Road Race pan only it is painted black. It may in fact be the Canton Road Race pan. I'm not sure.
The way to tell the difference is the old pan is a one piece stamping. It has all rounded corners and I believe the drain plug is straight out the bottom. It should NOT be used for street driving, The newer pan is a welded assembly, again, just like the Canton Road Race only painted black. The drain plug is on the side of the sump. I have 5 1/2" under the oil pan. I have 17,000 miles on it and OK so far. Dwight

I have the Canton marine pan which is not very tall. You can see that the blow-proof bell housing is much lower. I had the flang trimmed later, but it is still the lowest point of the car. I have yet to hit anything.

Get a T shaped pan. The bellhousing probably should be the lowest part. I had an Armondo's pan and it tucked up nicely. The bottom washers for the bolts on the bellhousing got ground flat eventually.

After-market oil pans will usually get you the clearance you need. But having your bell housing hang too low is asking for trouble. Here's a shot of my block plate and bell housing that have been trimmed at the bottom to match the clearance of the oil pan.

as Craig said, sounds like you have the 'shipping pan' and need to get one like has been pictured on the thread _ Canton or similar . Bill

Check my Canton Pan and I recomend the Canton Windage tray. It is on level with the bottomo of the trans.

I do not know about the 460, but I was told that Canton has a special oil pan for Superformance Cobras. Something about chamfering the edges to clear the cross member. I would make sure to mention what car you are putting it in when you order the pan, just in case there a special one for your application also.

You may check how level your drive shaft is. I also had low clearance but there was quite an angle to my drive shaft. I raised the rear of the transmission to "flatten" out the drive shaft angle and it gave me much more clearance.

You have to get the special Superformance Canton Pan. If you don't you will not be able to reinstall you sawy bar. You can get them from Southern Automotive. They are in GA. But if you get a windage tray don't accept the Ford Racing model only get the Canton tray.

On my SP 460 the pan has several inches of ground clearance but is within 1/4 inch of the sway bar. It is a 7 quart Canton 15-760C

Canton Pan and Windage Tray
The trick is to get the pan that has the lowest possible depth, fits in the SPF frame and still provides sufficient oil capacity. There is no crossmember to interfere with the pan so you can use a flat style pan similar to the 12 quart racing 427 S/O pans. Front sump pans that fit Mustangs are built around the front crossmember. There are some shallow aluminum pans but I wanted to dent and not break in case of a scrape so I wanted a steel pan.
