Default Tires

Hello Everyone:

I'm considering swapping my stock BF Goodrich T/A radials off my SPF for some Goodyear "Gumball" racing tires. Presently I've got 275/60's in the rear and 255/60's in the front. Has anyone swapped these out on their SPF and if so, how do you like it? I think I found the site with the info on them...

Google Roger Krause Racing Tires or give them a call at 800-510-7223. They'll have the right size Goodyears at decent prices, but not DOT approved. They also have Avons that are DOT approved, but considerably more expensive. I'm running 245/60VR15 and 295/50VR15 BFG T/As on 7 1/2" and 9 1/2" rims, but will be calling Roger before long. I've been trying to wear out the T/As for a while as they don't stick too well, but they do wear like iron. Anyone want a really good deal on these puppies? Rich

You will love they way they handle when driving aggressively. If you don't drive your car often they will flat spot and feel a little square for a few miles.

Yes they do throw stones so protect the fenders.

The goodyears are bias tires and follow every rut in the road. The first few miles are very unstabile. I have a set mounted on seprate rims which I have run on the road a few times. They look awesome and stick like glue but for cruising I prefer the BFG's. As far as the Goodyears go... As a daily tire the junk flying into the fenderwell and the noise and vague straight line performance on back roads make them really not practical. For a track event or autocross you must have a sticky tire and that is why you just need two sets of rims for the different tires. JMO

Thanks for the feedback everyone. As I'm not doing much track time (my insurance agent won't let me) I guess I'll stick with my BFG radials. Although, upping to the 295's in the rear sounds good once mine are ready for replacement. In the mean time, any for sale, hint.. hint??

Do it!
I did it this year and don't regret it for a second. The BFG's really are not that great and the Goodyears are great except for flat spotting, which drives out in 3-4 miles. Do it!

Yokohama Avids are much better than the BFG T/A radials and cheaper to boot. At least that was my experience. Both were 295X50-15 rear tires. Be aware that the 295 Avid tire has about 1 inch more tread width than the 295 T/A. The rear Avids rub slightly on hard corners on my car. I could solve the problem if I would just raise my car by about 1/4 inch. Just haven't got around to it.

If you want the "vintage" look and are ok with non-DOT, bias-ply tires, then go with the Goodyear billboards (they look awesome, but you need to be comfortable with the limitations outlined earlier).

If you want a DOT radial tire, you should consider the Avons (some say they are about the best 15" Cobra tire on the market right now). The primary downside of the Avons is the cost (as they cost considerably more than the other tires that have been mentioned).

I found two links that sell Avon's directly. Nice tire, but like you said, a bit pricey. About $200 more than most others std mfg's radials. But very tempting. Here's a couple of direct links for others to enjoy... Please post if you find anything cheaper.

The Avons are superb. I have almost 3000 miles on a set, including 150 track miles and 12 or more passes at the drag strip. There is lots of tread left. I would say I am going to get at least 5000 miles, maybe 6000 or more. As the mileage racks up I feel more and more like they are worth every penny.
