Whats the number? That will help us tell you how to find it.
replicas don't actually come with a VIN number, they do have a serial number from the manufacturer. In the case of an SPF it's on the top of the frame rail in the engine compartment. Earlier SPF's had a longer number (I dont recall how many digits) newer cars have 7 digits (for example my car is SPO2293).
In CA I had to get the CHP to assign me a VIN number, which is again attached to the frame, but its still not 17 digits, the asisgned VIN in CA is 8 or 10 digits I don't remember for sure.

same here. In Florida, I showed DMV my MSO and they assigned VIN spo2473 to my car ( same as car's serial #). In addition to frame rail also find serial # on roll bar and inside trunk lid.

In Pa., the state sends you a plate with the VIN on it when you title/register the car. The plate is supposed to be riveted to the firewall.

I see you're in Switzerland (according to your profile). Are you trying to register the car in the States or there? Each State here goes about it a little differently. Looks like you have SPF #1710, which sounds right given the '03 assembly. You should also see this same number stamped on the rollbar upright inside the cockpit, as well as on the rear hinges for the trunk.

SPF serial numbers , "chassis " numbers , are located :
* stamped on the front cross member visible when hood is up and looking down
by the radiator .
* stamped on base of roll bar, inboard side
* stamped on hood hinges
there might be more stampings, I dont recall .
Also, it would be on a SPF vin plate ,on the firewall , or most likely inner fender apron on the passenger side near the firewall . However, these are easily changed or removed .
Also , over time the serial number alpha/ numeric identification and number
of characters changed as listed below from the Performance Unlimited website
:
SPF serial sequencing differs over time and is in 3 formats :
1. AC9CSLK1897AM1xxx. a 17 digit format with the xxx (the LAST 3 digits)
being the spf chassis number . these existed on cars
032 thru 577 as well as 579, 580, 582,583, 584 and 586.
2. SPxxx, a 5 digit format. used on cars 578, 581, 585, 587, 588, 589 and
590. the last 3 digits being the chassis number.
3. SPOxxxx, a 7 digit form. used on cars 591 and newer, the last digits
being the chassis number.
To further complicate things, as was stated , many states assign their own vins onto the car , hence title and registration ties to those, that are not even remotely close to a SPF chassis number . In Mich, mine is a long state assigned vin now re-classified as a 1998 a
"Assembled Roadster" .
To add even more confusion, some cars are running around with washed titles/reflecting serial numbers that would have been - or were - 1965 or 1966 Ford cars ( ie, 6R08Kxxxxxx indicating a calif produced k code engined 66 ford mustang convertible ) .
If the car you are looking at is in fact a SPF ( and could be as Sunset Red is one of their color offerings ) , it would appear that the serial you listed is an 'assigned' serial number . Hope this helps .
edited : added vin plate reference above and following :
My bet is that the serial you listed is a MICHIGAN state assigned vin as I just checked my Mich assigned vin and it is the same MI prefex with same alpha/ numeric similarities . My vin reads ( altered so that "X" equals a numeric) : MI023XAXXXLXXXX . Yep, it is most likely a Mich vin so you will have to check the other stamped markings to confirm the SPF chassis number .
