When did superformance quit utilizing the start button
I had always like the start button on Cobras. I looked at one the other day it did not have one, is there a reason they stopped.

Superformance never installed a start button in the first place. This was a dealer installed option. I own SPF#770 and had the Olthoffs install a start button when I purchased the car in October 2000. Since then, I've replaced the button with a momentary on toggle switch with a safety cover, ala NASCAR style.
To my knowledge, Hi Tech never installed a start button at the factory. They just became a poplar delaer installed option with a lot of owners having them installed.

The start button is just duplicating the same the key does so why have it? You still have to put in the key and turn it, then push the button. Why not just turn the key and start it. Sounds like adding another point of failure.

For those of you that have the start button, did you keep the ignition switch also (redundant as per Poolw)?. I have also seen some that replace the switch with a combination start button and toggle swicth w/ safety cover (to energize the system and kill it). While not a great idea for security, it does eliminate the redundancy issue. How do you guys have your installed?

It is correct that Superformance cars never car from the factory with push button starters.
I have it shown as a "optional wiring arrangement" on my wiring diagrams...
I'll cut and paste the information to add one to my gallery later today... (done)
But also be aware that there were 3 different ignition switches used on Superformance cars over the years, and many of the original switches could have been swapped-out by a previous owner, they were a problematic item because of heavy key chains and the nature of the beast in general....

Start Button/Toggle Switch Combo
Archrms,
I recently converted to a combination of start button and toggle switch and did away with the keyed ignition switch. For security I added a hidden kill switch in the cockpit. I also added a doo dad called a Battery Brain Type III. It hooks up to your battery and is designed to protect your battery from being drained to far when the engine is off. That feature isn't particularly important to me, but it also comes with a key fob remote that allows you to connect and disconnect your battery via the remote. My battery is in the trunk which I now just keep locked all the time. I figure this combination is about as secure as a keyed ignition switch. Just hope I can remember how it works each time I take the car out!
It's not authentic, but kinda fun. Throw a switch, push a button, and you're off!

I bought mine from a local RV parts store, but they have an online store. See the link below:

Scroll down the page a little and you will see the Battery Brain. Make sure you choose the Type III. It is also referred to as "Gold" on some websites. Their sale price is as good or better than any other place I looked.
The installlation is easy. It even has a terminal that allows you to keep certain components (such as a radio) connected even when you disconnect the battery and also can be wired so that it will not disconnect when the ignition switch is on. (I didn't want to have to worry about the Battery Brain shutting down my car while I was on the road. I have other components that seem more than capable of doing that already! ).

Did original cobras have a start button? If not where did the idea originate, I thought superformance was as close to original as possilbe? Thanks for all the quick responses.

I ran the power (wire that was connected to the "BAT" terminal of my keyed ignition switch) through a 30 amp rocker switch. On my car the source of that wire is the fuse box. So essentially, you are just inserting a kill switch between your power source and your ignition switch. You can then "hide" the switch anywhere that is practical within your cockpit.
In my case, the kill switch only effects stuff that is controlled by the ignition switch. It does not kill power to the entire car like a battery shut-off.

I don't get the push button idea either. It cries out kit car, especially the large red one from a Honda.
260/289 Cobras had a stock Falcon, Mustang, Fairlane, Galaxy ignition switch with Ford keys.
My 51 Ford woody flathead has an ignition key on the right of the steering column and a small chrome push button on the left. I think this was the last push button starter on a Ford.
