There really would be no way to tell if the extra coats had been applied. Sounds like a great way for a dealer to pocket extra money for no effort.
Also, "double coats" is an old painter's term for when you are spraying on color/clear and you overlap each coat 50% with the prior pass. So you are essentially spraying the same part of the car twice, once with the first pass and then again when you bring the gun across the other way. I personally have always viewed this as one coat, but there are still people out there that call this technique a double coat. Either way, you can only layer on so much material before you run into problems down the road. Plus spraying on extra clear only makes sense if you're going to sand off more of it (i.e. get the stripes even with the color).

Regarding the 3M protection, I chose Venture Shield for my SPF. I understand that it's a better product and heard rumors that 3M actually bought Venture Shield. They don't have a specific pattern for Superformance but the installer was able to adapt a pattern from a Backdraft pattern. I believe that it was provided by 3M and you can see the 3M pattern at

Eric,
My stripe is undetectable by touch except down near the oil cooler and the on the underside lip on the front narcel. The painter must have had a hang-over that day and didn't want to bend down to clear those areas enough. I think any paint job will have a few spots that are less than perfect. And color surely plays a part in how noticable they are. But over-all, the SPF paint is fantastic. After a few road trips you start to collect the patina of use on the car, rock chips and general wear & tear, so what the heck....just enjoy the car...

Good advice, especially on a dark colorered car!
After I get mine touched up from my "racing patina", I'm going to load up my front end with that stuff.

That 3M stuff looks like crap. I have seen several installs on high end cars and it not that great looking and it turns yellow after a while.
I will stick with paint chips. JMHO
