Default Double clear coat option new SPF roller

Can anyone tell me what the benefit would be, for the double clear coat option on a new SPF? It is an additional $425.

Twice as shiny. More prone to cracking

I would think the advantage would be a more durable clear coat offering a bit more protection from rock chips and road rash. As far a being twice as shiny, I doubt it.

I have heard over and over again that if you put on too much clearcoat, it tends to shrink and crack over time as the solvents are released. I will do a Google search to see if I can confirm.

Stone chips will damage 2 layers of clearcoat just as easy as 1 layer of clear coat. With the body flex on all fiberglass bodies, I would think that thicker paint would be a bad thing. FYI - SPF paint is excellent from the factory...not perfect, by very very good...

Just my $.02 here but I can't imagine that Superformance would purposely offer an option that would open them up to an increase in warranty liability due to paint failure. After all, we aren't talking about show quality finish that is perhaps 12-15 coats thick but rather an additional 2 coats of clear that might add a little more depth to the finish. I would guess that the only way you could tell the difference between the single clear and the double clear coat is to place the two cars next to each other. Personally, I could think of several other better ways to spend the $425. The stock Superformance finishes I have seen all looked great to me.

Clear coats are designed to be 2.5 mills thick with about .5 mill variance after sanding and buffing- more is not better and can lead to lots of problems.. You would never be able to tell the difference even side by side. Save your money. Maybe they sand the first two coats smooth and put two more on to make the stripes smooth?

Nope. They always spray the stripes first. Then they spray the basic car color. This way there is no edge at the stripes.

Welll....if you run your hand on the paint and stripe below the oil cooler you might notice the stripe standing proud of the other paint layers....quality control must have missed that on my car....and I also have a custom color on mine...stripes are perfect everywhere else...

No need to do a search, what you stated is correct in as far as the base solvents need time to flash before a secondary clear coat is put on. Since most new cars have one coat of clear already, adding a second really does not do much of anything except raise the price of materials to paint the car. The days of multiple clear coats is gone with the advent of low VOC (violent organic chemicals) paints as used for the last 2-3 years.......

I agree with the others, as the standard SPF paint is hard to beat. You'd be better off spending the extra cash on another option that is more functional.

Blas - I can feel the stripe if i run my hand over it. I would rate the paint on my car 8.5. Of course with black you see every imperfection, and #2632 has a couple. I am sure the average person couldnt see them, but having rubbed the car out and detailed it a few times, i do know where they are. I did have a spot on the lower back end that was missed in the final rub out from the factory, but i have since taken care of that.

I have noticed the paint is still extremely soft...makes it great for removing swirls but the swirls appear that much easier also. I have been told it can take a year or two for it to completely harden. Any other opinions on this?

FYI, your dealer should have told you that option is no longer available as of almost a year ago from the factory, unless they decided to bring it back. Dealt with a solid black with double clear coat about 18 months ago, and that was the last car I know of that was able to get it applied at the factory, and I really did not notice any difference, to be honest. Spend the $$ on something else you'd like on the chassis.

OK then, I used to order the cars for a dealership and last summer when I tried to get it for a customer, was told it was not an option anymore.
