Default TKO 600 - drips from speedometer cable

I have a tko 600 and notice a couple drips on the garage floor right beneath the speedometer cable. Does anyone know the sealing mechanism for the speedometer cable to transmission? I know I could jack it up and pull it out but this seamed easier. Thanks for any help.

Mine leaks from the speedo at the dash. I heard that the cable was wound the wrong way, but checked it and it was not. When the car is moving, the cable spins counterclockwise. I remove the speedo gear at the tranny, I did not see a sealing oring around the cable. Still puzzled about this.

The speedo cable should have an o-ring I believe.

I believe Blykins is correct. I had an electronic speedometer and no cable but the Hall Effect Unit that went into the place where the gear would normally go had an O ring on it and I never had a drop of fluid come out.

I went thru various leak problems, 0-ring crimps, cable questions, right-angle reverse gear leaks, speedo jumping, odo sticking I finally gave up after second speedo replacement and complete cable and gear replacements and went with a Smiths electronic speedo, works perfect, rock steady, no problems now. A plug from Std Transmission & Gear has finally stopped any and all leaks from the mechanical speedo port on my TKO600

Yep it should have an O-ring on there. You could always pull the cable from the trans and add a bead of silicone when re-installing.

Thanks everyone!!!!, I jack it up and see if an o-ring is there. I know my last one never leaked there so this one must be missing the o-ring.

Preliminary testing with the convex mirror stuck to the existing fender mirror looks very promising, I have not permanently attached it since the rim is black and I am still looking for silver. It may be the best $1.89 I ever spent on the car.

Well, I pulled it out, the o-ring was there and in great shape. As I was inspecting I let it hang down and low and behold it is leaking out where the cable gets crimped. I will smear some ultra black and see how it goes.

I had the exact same issue. I used the grey RTV. It's more resistant to oil. No more leaks.

I was too lazy to quit waiting for the oil to drain from the cable as it weeped out for 1/2 hour so I used my wife's hot melt glue gun. It appears to have worked and it dries super fast. Time will tell if the oil degrades the glue. If it does I will let it drain overnight and use the ultra grey since that is what I have.

Now I have to figure out why the remote reservoir for the clutch master cylinder leaks, I have tightened both clamps. I plan on draining it down until it is 1/4 full. Anybody have any ideas on that one. If I had my preference it would not even have a remote reservoir.

May have made progress on the remote reservoir also. I knew I had tightened it in the past and when I tightened again it was loose. If you bottom the reservoir out on the holder and tighten the clamp it will tighten. If you slowly rotate the reservoir or over normal driving it vibrates it slips up about 3/16" and then it is loose again and leakes. The key is get about 3/16" gap from the reservoir and holder and tighten. There must be a small radius at the bottom of the holder and once it slips above that the clamp loosens. We shall see.

Thanks Got the bug,

I searched and saw the boiling water tip. There are some sweet billet ones out there, should be standard on a SPF. Did you ever solve your hose issue?

The fluid seeps out at the back of the speedometer housing and comes down the outside of the cable to form an occasional drip.

My speedometer cable which was leaking at the crimp and repaired with my wife's glue gun worked perfect for 6 months, not one drip, yesterday it failed and left a nice puddle. So if you have this leak, disconnect cable from transmission, let the cable drain overnight, clean metal crimp and cable area and apply black rtv silicone sealant to the metal crimp and cable. Let dry before installing and you will be good to go. The gear lube dissolved the hot glue gun glue.

My leaking slave cylinder reservoir was repaired with seal-all and appears to be holding up well.

I usually smear a high temp axle grease on the speedo cable housing that plugs into the trans lubricating the o-ring. in addition a little "right-stuff" on the flange that touches the block. the propellant (air) in the right-stuff expands and makes a kinda silicone foam seal that can be helpful as well.

additionally I usually pack a little hi-temp red grease in the speedo cable itself to aid in smoothing the rotation and reducing "needle bounce".

If you have trans oil expanding and pushing oil up the speedo cable , you may have a transmission heat issue , combined with overfull transmission fluid.

I fought with the leaky cable and leaky speedo for 4 years. Tried the silicone thing and even adding o-rings.

I went with the electronic one from Kirkham. No more problems ever.
