Viper Engine in a SPF MK III

Curious if this has been done.--- looks like it would clear the hood. thoughts>?

I don't know of one going in an SPF, but DV put one in a Classic Roadster. Check with Double Venam. He might be able to share some info with you.

I know a guy with one in a 90" Everett Morrison car. The body has to go on over the engine. I don't think it will come out through the hood opening.

Steve...why??? A Viper sounds like my vacuum cleaner. Fast, but embarassing on the aural side.

working on my first SPF MKIII has made me want to do a second one.

--thinking out loud and geeking out on engine ideas. and Vipers are Plummeting on the used car market, along with everything else.

other thouights -- in reality--- In Trevor Legates Book, "Cobra the first 40 years"

---the car that keeps "Speaking to me" is the 1957 Ace with a 1957 >? Corvette Engine..

However, --I have to get the first one done and on the road first.

Terry is right. It just won't sound correct.

I had a SRT/10 pickup before the Cobra. A lot of the guys on the SRT/10 site I belonged to wanted it to sound like a big block V8. It's not going to happen no matter what type of exhaust you put on it.

Also, they are pretty much maxed out for power unless you go inside the engine and replace a lot of the part. Pistons are very fragile and tend to fail if there is any detonation at all.

That's worse then putting a big block in it.

To put a Viper engine in a Cobra in my opinion would be pretty darn cool if twin turbo, but I probably would go another route if only normally aspirated. Then again if one was to go to the extent of such an elaborate twin turbo why not just put the money into a stroked Windsor twin turbo? I think I'd just put the Viper engine in a Viper when it comes down to it.

Here I am next to a larger displacement twin turbo Hennessy Viper on street tires. I beat him by about a half second as I had drag radials on the car. He did trap about 25 mph faster than me though.

Steve,

The sound of these cars is a big part of the experience, so I would stick with some type of V8. I am partial to the small block motors, but if you want a monster motor, start with a big block and go from there! As they say, no replacement for displacement!

But McDoo, the GT40's won by putting bigger, heavier engines in the car.

I know it's an old thread, I was researching something and it got the best of me.

Steve,

Vipers are cool, but the V10 just does not sound that great to me either (as mentioned above) compared to a V8 ... but the car does look pretty good all on it's own. So just leave the motor in the Viper and call it good.

Now ... What about the '57 Ace with 'Steve Special' 289 ...

Would look good, go good and sound great!!

BMW V12 instead of Viper V10!!!!

Well, on ffcobra, there is a guy in Houston who just put a twin-turbo BMW V12 in a Factory Five. Search for "Unveiled: Top Secret Ubercobra". Wayne Presley did the turbo work.

I heard VW makes a pretty good V12, somewhere in 1001HP range and powers the Bugatti ~240MPH or something crazy fast

Hi guys,

I know this may sound sacreligious to any of you US based guys, but I have a GM LS7 427ci in my SPF...I was really hesitant to go the non Ford powerplant route at first and personally agonised over the decision for ages...but now having lived with my car for about a year now, I can't imagine a better marriage with a Cobra...

I live in Australia where we have unbelievable strict vehicle licencing laws which essentially means that you have to have a motor that meets the emissions laws in place at the time the car was 1st registered...So with a new SPF on order in Dec 2007 with plans to licence it in 2008, I had to choose a motor that met 2008 Australian emissions laws! So, if I wanted to choose a Ford motor, it meant buying a 5.4 litre quad cam modular crate motor...

After months of deliberation and research, I decided on the latest GM LS7 motor which gave me 505 hp straight out of the crate....

Not my choice for a motor in a Cobra, but Ilmor makes a marine version rated at 720hp. The motors are well liked in performance boating community, and have been reliable. This is with no supercharger or turbo either. I think the motor has a lot of potential, and IMO sounds pretty nasty with the right exhaust.
