Good question but I do not have an answer an easy answer I know the input shafts have a different number of splines. They have different torque ratings and different ratios so make sure to match with your rearend. Difference in price is neglibigle $100.

Tko
here is a link to Tremec
http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/news/20news.asp
I bought the TKO 600 because of the 2.87 1 st gear. In a Cobra the weak link is the tires unless your running slicks.

Look for the TCET # from Dwights post on the trans.

Cobras - Maybe different gears, but the TKO 500 vs. the TKO 600 isn't going to make much difference in the price of the car.

A metal tag with the TCET # is held on by one of the bolts connecting the main case to the tail housing.

Call Jimi at Standard Transmission at 800-783-8726 or email him at jimig@standardtransmission.com He can tell you identifiers on TKO500 vs 600.
I know one way - unscrew the shifter boot hold down ring (the chrome ring that holds down the rubber fitting at the base of the shifter) and look down onto the top of the tranny. 600's have a RED anodized plate where the shifter enters the housing (like Don's above), 500's are mill finish.
Jimi probably knows an easier way.
