SPF - Under wheelarch/guard protection

Hi all,

I've noticed that there is not a lot of protection under the wheelarch/guards on my SPF.

The protection I'm referring to is some form of padding/protection barrier to stones or other debris being flicked up by the tyres and hitting the fibreglass guards from underneath and therefore causing damage to the paintwork on top of the guards.

I've heard about a number of different methods of increasing the level of protection ranging from painting on a thick rubber insulation type product to cutting out and sticking on neoprene/wetsuit type material under the guards

I'd welcome any experience/advice you'd like to share on this issue?

I did all the glass underside with black truck bed liner. Used 2 qts.plus hardner,put it on with a three inch brillo type roller. Did 12,000 mi. last summer and no stars. My driveway is 800 ft. of gravel. SPF #2773 Jerry

I used the do it yourself Herculiner truck bed liner material. With the one gallon can I got six coats on it.

I run the GoodYear Bill Board tires that kick up a lot of rocks, and no issue after 7000 miles.

With the number you have ( SPF #), your's should already have the material. The U.S. bound ones had it long ago. I have 1726( and SPC037) and they both are lined. They may have dropped it as standard when the exchange rate went the other way, I know some of the one time standard items are now an option. You should be able to get, pre-cut from a Superformance dealer. It is similar in texture to a wetsuit, didn't really think about until you mentioned it, and because it is pliable and fairly thick it "absorbs" rock and debris before it can inpact the fender underside. Since it was already on our cars I'm not sure, but believe that it is also self adhesive. I'd check with the dealer....

i have installed the 'wetsuit material to several spf's, the factory 1/8" stuff is too thin and does'nt cover enough area. i sell 1/4" stuff and install to cover entire fiberglass portion of wheel well. my prices are very reasonable too. if anyone is interested, shoot me a PM and we'll go from there.

I agree with WDZ, I have #2572 and the foam insulation was pre-installed in all the wheel wells by the factory.

The factory foam that was installed on my car (2613) seems work well. That paint on stuff is a mess (I used it on another replica), but the results are good in terms of protection and sound reduction.

I sprayed the Bondo rubberized undercoating in my wheel wells and under the floor boards. It helped a lot. Very messy, and smelly.

Hmmm...My SPF (2792) has about a 4'' wide strip of the "wet suit" type rubber material under the rear fenders and nothing under the front fenders at all. Other than the 4" strip, the firbregalss fenders are all exposed.

Whilst having the 4'' strip gives some protection, it really only covers about 30- 40% of the exposed underside of the fibreglass rear fenders and I'd personally prefer to get a little more insurance than that.

I don't know if there's been an inconsistency in the manufacturing process with my particular build or not, and to be honest, it does not really worry me because it's a pretty minor issue when compared to the rest of the car...I've been so impressed with the rest of the car's design and manufacture that I'm certainly not complaining.

"csx wnab" - do you have any pictures that you can share on the forum to demonstrate what you've done with the 1/4" material - I'll send you a PM to further explore options for me, but it might be of interest to other forum readers thinking about the same issue?

I used 2 coats of the brush on bedliner after I heard that flung rocks could transmit through and show up as a "starburst" in the paint, topside. Got it at Home Depot, easy install and have never had an issue.
