Question Starter motor cable

A plastic wire retainer split and allowed the red starter motor cable get too close to the header melting the insulation down to the copper. Ran to OReilly's for a new wire. All they had were 4 gauge. Superformance installs 2 gauge. I installed anyway, and all works just fine. I run a 427 S/O with a Powermaster XS Torque starter. Anybody think this will lead to problems????

Are you refering to the large red cable from the firewall solenoid to the starter?

The short answer is "Yes, you should replace it with a 2 gauge wire." Why? Because the 4 gauge wire gives you additional resistance under the heavy amperage draw of cranking. This results in a lower voltage to the starter, resulting in heavier amperage draw and increased internal heat in the starter. Bottom line: The cable is not likely to catch fire and melt, but the life of your starter will be shortened.

I would definitely replace with 2 gauge as was original with SPF wiring, that's a huge current load circuit directly to the starter from solenoid. JMHO

Yep, that cable.
But it looks like others disagree with my decision too. The 2 gauge is hard to find. OK......I'll call Dynamic.

USe some liquid electrical tap and cover the bare sport with 2-3 layers. Then cover the whole thing with red tape. It will work as good as new. And it would be hard to spot the repair.

or go hit an electrical supplier in your area. they should have red high temp heat shrink.

also Professional Truck shops in your area may be able to point you in the direction of a NAPA or similar that can get you 0/0 or 2 or ... or ...

Napa seems to have good stuff, sometimes "Parts+" Franchise houses can too.

Remember -- they can pull things from distribution if you can spec what you are looking for.

Professional Truck places also have some good stuff.
