460 air cleaner
my brother has an spf with a 460 in it and he is looking to get an air filter set up that has the cobra name across the top front of the lid, he bought one today and it does not fit, it is the ford motorsport one and is kinda long, hood wont close cause its too long, any one here have this type of air cleaner on a 460 and have clearance? if so where did you get it from or a part number to the cleaner assy.
its a 460 crate engine from ford/
thanks to all who post

I have the cast aluminum one on mine. If you look close in the first picture, you can see where I ground down the back of the air cleaner to fit under the hood. It's on top of a BG 850 with a 3/8" spacer and an aluminum Holley heat shield. I have the Blue Thunder intake which is supposed to be about the lowest intake.
Sorry, I don't have a part #. It was on the car when I bought it.
Scott
on top of the BG with spacers very tight
on top of my Holley HP 1000 CFM no spacers fit easy

Hi Maxum 101.
I too have a ford 460 crate(2007) and the msd distributor sticks up too high to allow the cobra air cleaner. Just something else to be aware of. I went with a oval billet that is not as long. Check my gallery if you want to.

Brent,
If you have the MSD 8580 distributor, you might take a look at the MSD 8577. It is 5/8" smaller in diameter - don't know if it is less tall or not...
It solved my hood scoop clearance problem.
Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom
Yes I have the 8580 and the diameter isn't the problem for me although it would help too.It stands too tall for long air cleaner to fit mostly due to using a lowered torker2 intake for hood clearance.
Thanks
Brent

I have the 460 with the victor single plane intake and 850 BG carb. The breather has a drop base of about 1/2".

I know this thread is a few years old but I am curious as to where you got the air cleaner with the drop base?

James,
Google is your friend!
Just to get you started, here's one result: JEGS Performance Chrome Air Cleaners - Free Shipping on All Orders @ JEGS
There are several "depths" for drop bases for Holley carbs - I use the max for one of my cars.
The hazard in this effort is to check the CFM airflow for whatever filter you end up with - you can strangle a big-block if the filter can't pass enough air. I use a 2-1/2 x 14" diameter filter from K&N that seems marginal, but it fits...
Tom

I am aware of the round ones but I was referencing the one shown in the thread above from Maxum that had an oval with a drop plate?

My 460 has a Torker II manifold, which has a low profile. I use a 14" drop base air cleaner bottom with a K&N filter/top. No clearance issues.
