Effective Make Your Own Riv-Nut Installation Tool
I have been meaning to post this, but here is what I learned. After purchasing a fancy $100 riv-nut tool kit at a swap meet last year, I soon found that the tool can really only handle aluminum riv-nuts, even though the sales guy swore it will work on steel riv-nuts (maybe 6-32 threads!), imagine that! Not wanting to invest more money, I found a home made tool (link below) that I duplicated quickly in my shop and installed the sturdy 5/16" thread size STEEL riv nuts using my basic wrenches. I used steel bar stock for the "anvil" instead of aluminum as shown and now have used it for 10-32, and 3/8: steel riv nuts also. I was amazed how easy and effective it was. You wont be able to install dozens with this tool, but for my home shop it was perfect.
Enjoy
