Brake fluid???
Does anyone have an opinion on the best brake fluid brand they use or prefer. Is everyone using DOT 3 or 4. I have willwood brakes non abs.

Prestone DOT 4. 510 degrees dry boiling temp, 311 degrees wet. Use it for many track days with no fade. Easy to buy at most stores including Walmart.

I went with ate gold. Best price. 536* boiling point 385* wet. Can leave in car for up to 3 years for street driving.

I don't think I have a tool or gauge that even goes up to 1200 degrees.:LOL: That said, I'm wayyyy more likely to be staring at a new puddle under my FE and I will tell you that having your brake fluid colored blue is a real time saver. Especially if you happen to have those cool looking Girling reservoirs from the old Austin Healeys. Yes, they look great, and they tend to leak, and the leak tends to track far away before deciding to drop and form a puddle.:CRY: Phantom drips from a frame rail are just a Cobra thing, I believe. Amber brake fluid tends to look like fresh oil or grease (but I use Brad Penn, which is green), and I hate tasting my puddles, which is what I usually end up doing. Yes, I think the blue brake fluid does taste a little better than the gold, but it doesn't taste as sweet as my conventional green antifreeze, but it is better than Brad Penn, which really doesn't have as much of a taste as you might think it would.:cool:

Castrol SRF Racing brake fluid. It is not cheap, probably the most expensive one out there, but it performs well and consistently. Was having some problems with inconsistent brakes with the Willwood 600, replaced it with Castrol SRF and the problems went away. I was thoroughly impressed.

Brake fluid
I have been using Valvoline Dot 3 & 4 Synthetic brake fluid for the last 10 years with no issues at all. I have it in my CTS V, 02 Corvette and my Tahoe. I also put in in my ERA Cobra and it's been 5 years now and no contamination at all in the system. It's recommended for all brake systems requiring Dot 3 or 4 fluid and it mixes with all brake fluids. I recently took apart my master cylinder for inspection and it was clean as could be and all the seals looked like new after 5 years. Also if you have a accident and get it on your paint it wipes right off.

While we are talking about brake fluid
I bought a air operated evac system from Summit a couple of years ago. I love it and highly recommend it. I done several Cobras, 67 Charger, trucks, 05 Ford, etc. One man can change the fluid in a car / truck in 30 to 35 minutes by himself. May I suggest you determine what temperature the fluid will be subjected to before you do anything. You may notice the field narrowed to just a few once you know what it has to endure. Just a suggestion. Tru |
