Pre-oiling options?
My car has been sitting for a while, and I'm wondering if there is something I can do to get oil through the motor short of pulling the dizzy and spinning the oil pump. I know given the frequency with which I get my car out, I'm exactly the kind of person who needs a pre-oiling system. I guess that should move up the list (everybody's got a list of what's next for their car, right?).
In the mean time, any suggestions?
Thanks,
JLW

Get yourself an Accusump by Canton. 3-quart size with the electric valve. I think, you can get them at Summit.

When I was building my cobra I had exactly the same thoughts. Since I was planning to install an oil cooler I figured some sort of "preluber" would be a great idea to pressurize the system prior to firing the beast up. I ended up using a Preluber by Engine Lubrication Systems in Frazer, PA. If interested, here is the link: http://www.preluber.com/
It is kinda noisy but only runs for 25 seconds before shutting off. The Preluber draws oil directly out of the oil pan so I plumbed the preluber hoses into the oil cooler return line to insure that any oil would pass through the filter before entering the engine. This system will turn back on and run up to five minutes after you shut the engine down to keep hot oil from "coking" on the inside of the cylinder heads and block. I also like this system because when I do an oil change I energize the preluber and it helps clear out the dirty oil from the cooler and lines so I get a more thorough oil change.

You can also get the Accusump from...
Mustang's Unlimited...I special ordered my complete package from them I think it was about $525 delivered, with 10 ft of ss line, electric valve, 3 qt Accusump, brackets, fittings, Oil filter adaptor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are not using it, now would be the time to drain your oil and go with synthetic oil...change it just before you start it, and it will have some oil in the top end.
Research on Preoilers
Good question, JW.
Here is a place to check on this site!
Use of Electric Pre-luber
I read the info from the pre-luber site and this system seems interesting. I like the idea of oil pressure before the engine starts and after shut-down. The system requires no additional oil to be added to the oiling system. As a bonus, the unit can pump the oil from the pan during oil changes. For those with this system installed, can you adjust the time the pump runs before starting, after started and duration after shut-down? Did you get the "standard" system of "for turbo engines" that has the after shut-down control? Thanks
Plug off the fuel line, pull the spark plugs, and crank it until you get oil pressure. And that's if you're really paranoid. I would just crank without touching the throttle - on my own car, of course.
I used a Weldon pump 9200-A with a filter and check valve, pumps up to 26psi. Also installed a low pressure switch that turns on pump below 20psi. This pump is used by NASCAR to cool rear end dope,
$300.00 and you do the plumbing.
I have a 1 qt Accusump for a preoiler. I can get 30 lbs of pressure for about 20-30 seconds. Check valve prevents it from loading the remote filter or oil cooler.
Cobra29 had questions regarding the "Preluber". I purchased the model that can be set to turn on and run after engine shutoff. The preluber supplies 55-60 lbs. of oil pressure while running. The control can be set anywhere from 0-6 minutes to help prevent hot oil from "coking" on metal surfaces. There is a concern expressed by the Accusump people that because the Preluber draws oil directly from the oil pan that dirty unfiltered oil is sent into the engine. This is only true IF the unit is plumbed into the oil pressure sending unit port. If the unit is plumbed into the oil cooler return line all oil is filtered prior to entering the engine. Remember, even the oil pump itself draws unfiltered oil from the pan and sends it to the filter before the oil gets to the engine. The preluber merely replaces the oil pump for a few seconds as a pressurization device. In reality, the Preluber takes up less space than the Accusump and can be used in addition during an oil change to purge the oil cooler and hoses which are not usually drained during a normal oil change.
Since I run a T-sump road racing style pan I added a second drain plug to drain oil from since the Preluber replaces the original drain plug with a special fitting adapter. That way I avoided having to use the quick disconnect fitting on the suction hose as specified in the instructions supplied with the Preluber. Accusumps end up costing about the same as the Prlubers once you add the tank, brackets, electric solenoid switch, valve, and plumbing. The Preluber comes with everything you need in the kit. The only thing you may have to swap out is the oil pan adapter fitting. Preluber has fittings to fit most if not all applications for around $20. I have been very satisfied with this setup.
