Exhuast Protectors

ACTUALLY LEG PROTECTORS, I'VE SEEN EXHUAST GUARDS
ON SOME CARS THAT COVER THE SIDEPIPE, DOES ANYONE KNOW A SOURCE OR HAVE A FAB PLAN ?
:D

Mr.Fixit 12-20-2002 12:30 PM

Those get hot too. Hot enough for seatbelt webbing to melt to them. You will learn quickly enough to not touch the sidepipes.

Somebody posted this about 2 years ago and I keep it handy to remind myself what not to do.

And that's a left leg, that guy was the driver! I have only seen it happen to passengers. I do admit, I have burned the fronts of my shins before, while underhood of a runing cobra, but I felt it long before it burned me anywhere near that bad. That guy had to really lay his leg on the sidepipe for some time to get that kind of burn.

Maybe he was the winner of "how must pain can you tolerate contest."

I am having my pipes coated and adding a stainless steel shield to minimize the snakebites. Cobras can bite in more ways than one.

Cammer 12-20-2002 02:05 PM

That picture is off my wife - she was the passenger....and as luck would have it and me trying to be a gentleman I went around to help her out of the car...........this was not her usual way to exit and I guess messing up her routine was enough to get her 'bitten'. By the way that was through her sock!!!!! SS pipes get 'realllllllly hot'

Try Enzo at Finishline. He sells SS heat shields for side pipes.

Fred Douglass 12-20-2002 04:27 PM

Johnny...not necessarily a "fab" plan, BUTT...

..take a look at my photo Gallery...there's a black Butler there belonging to Mike Follick. The steel guards are perforated stainless---lots of trucks have 'em. You weld LUGS onto the side-pipes and tap them. The screens can be bent easily and then drilled for bolts which go into the lugs (o'course). I'd try to cut and paste the pictures from my Gallery, but I have a wood-fired computer, and whenever I try tricky stuff, the power grid for SE New England blows or at least blinks, all my neighbors' toilets flush simultaneously and their dogs howl endlessly! :JEKYLHYDE

My side pipes have the S-steel gaurds that Fred mentioned. They too get hot enough to burn flesh. Like most cobra drivers I've learned to step wide, but on the pasanger side I added even more protection. I used coat hangers to fab a mockup and then had a local welder make a gaurd out of S-Steel wire. The high surface area of the wire lets it cool very quickly. The gaurd actually covers the outlet as well. It may look a little odd and certainly not "origional" but my wife no longer threatens to call the divorce lawyer when she gets out of the car.

I've got the shields from Enzo. They work GREAT on my car - never come close to being burned. The shields get quite warm, but I wouldn't describe them as very hot. The shield has been cool enough to touch went the collector - immediately in front of the shield - was hot enough to immediately melt the rubber on my shoe. (See my pics).

Frank Newman

I made sidepipe protectors (or rather leg protectors...) by using a 6 in. tube as mould and put epoxi and fiber on the outside. Then some SS net from a fridge, bent it and fabricated 4 in. clamps and welded to the net. Then glued the net, sanded the outside and to the local paintshop. If someone can explain to me how to put pictures here, I will do so, otherwise see my homepage:

The advantage with plastic is of course the better insulation... and Stainless Steel actually transfers heat 50% better than normal steel.

Re Cammer... "That picture is of my wife"...
So ClubCobra gets a "readers wives" section after all! Wehey!

Nasty burn though, she has my sympathies.

I used that heatproof exhaust wrap on the headers, which lowered engine bay temps a lot, but had the downside of raising the sidepipe temp a great deal, which made me even more cautious about entering/leaving the car! It's hot enough to cook your breakfast on now!
. Think I should have wrapped that exhaust bandage around my legs instead...no more burns!

I did move onto the heat shields, like the trucks use..still hot but they look great I think. I tried using mimimal amount of fastenings to prevent heat soak from the side pipes, but there's still the radiant heat problem. I guess caution is the word here, and perhaps a sign on the passenger side "beware of the exhaust"!
