Charging system wiring?
Guy's I'm changing over to a one wire internally regulated 100amp Powermaster alternator in my SPF.
My question concerns how to hook up the one wire from the alternator.
Does this #6 heavy wire go directly to the battery side of the solenoid which is mounted on the firewall?
And do I need a fuseable link for this one wire? If so, what size fueable link?
Also, I'm not using the factory voltage regulator plugs which are mounted on either side of the inner fenders and allow the externally regulated alternators to be placed on driver or passenger side of the engine.
How would I get power to the dash without using these factory plugs?
Could I connect a #10 wire to the firewall mounted solenoid from the #10 red wire which runs under the dash and eventually plugs into the AMP gauge?
Also I'm replacing that AMP gauge with a Autometer Volt gauge, whish I believe to be a strait forward install? Or not?
I hope this makes sense?
Thanks for the help guys!

Rodney,
I'm still building my kit (not a SPF, a West Coast), but have changed from a 3-wire system to a single wire Powermaster 140 Amp alternator. Simply run the single heavy wire to the battery side of the starter solenoid on the firewall. Powermaster does not recommend or require a fuseable link for this wire. Then, I disconnected my external regulator and removed it altogether.
Power to the interior on my kit is from a couple of wires that run from the battery side of the starter solenoid into the fuse panel through fuseable links.
That's it. It was really simple and works fine. Just need to get the alternator RPM above the speed threshold for it to self-excite. There's also the alternative to wire it like a 3-wire alternator, a Powermaster exclusive, apparently.
If you don't have your alternator yet and want to see Powermaster's installation instructions let me know and I'll either fax or scan and email to you.

I think if you run the single output wire to big red wire in the loom that used to clip to the regulator (there is one on each side of the engine bay), you are in business. Haven't played with the wiring on a SPF in some time, so check continuity to the ammeter to be sure.

Thanks!
Hey Thanks Guy's! This clears up a few concerns.
Couple of question though, what size fuseable link do I require for the new wire(10AWG) which will come out of the battery side of the solenoid to the dash wiring loom? Thanks again.

Rodney,
I believe it is 4 wire sizes smaller than the main wire. Your local Nappa guy has the theory and specs in his catalog. Defantately install one so if your alternator has a short, your car won't burn to the ground, (no pun intended)

Ok Steven, I will check into this four sizes smaller fuseable link. Thanks for your help.
