Tilt Steering
I am building a Shell Valley kit and would like to have a tilt wheel and also if possible have the turn signal lever on the right. Any one that knows of at least a way or a type of column to do this please respond. also let me know if there is a reason not to put in this type of column.
Thanks
Doc

Tllt columns have more parts to break. People often push/pull on their cobra's steering wheel more than they should while getting in and out of their car, I have seen a couple of tilt columns break their "tilt" due to this.

Got a great tilt column with turn signal lever on left from Ididit. Car is Classic Roadsters, and tilt column is manditory due to the column angle.

Tilt steering column?
Gee, did cobras come with a tilt column? How about a dvd player and a 11 speaker stereo w reclining high back seat. Oh well I guess this is what makes the world go round, different strokes for different folks.

Leroy,
I understand your point and in most cases I would agree but my intrest in the tilt isn't for comfort as much as function. With the standard column my knees hit the wheel when my feet are on the clutch and break pedal in the other shell valley cars I have sat in. I have droped floors in mine but I do not know if that will solve the problem.

Doc,
Used a GM tilt steering column works well, still working on the 11 speakers could only manage 4.

I got my tilt column off ebay from a guy who usually has several different lenths to choose from. E-mail me and I'll dig up his address for you. I searched (A LOT) to find a good column for a great price. It came flat black. I painted it my color. It has the GM connectors and NO IGNITION. Also my Moto Lita Repro wheel with the adaptor went right on perfectly.
With the Billet levers and Hazard button, I have $215 in the column. Check out the pic in my gallery.

Tried a straight (non-tilt) column in CR at first with same results. Not enough room between seat and wheel for my legs. Tilt column was manditory. Used Ididit 37" (for CR. SV may be different length) unpainted steel tilt column, and 14" Lecarra steering wheel. Also used Borgeson joints and collapsable column. Painted the top portion rattle can wrinkle black, and it matched the Lecarra hub perfectly. Painted the rest of the column epoxy black for durability. Added an ordinary 2" muffler clamp at the firewall to secure lower portion of column. Looks great, and works perfectly.
Horn, turn, flashers, and dimmer are built into column, but you have to put ignition switch on dash.
For a CR, DV has custom column with all these features already built in.

Have tilt, will travel
Mine certainly does not look "original" but then neither does my Mobra! Who cares, it's a HOT ROD REPLICA. Almost as "bad" ....My steering wheel is a French Lecarra (can hear the groans and internet brain strokes from the "purists" even now. Oh well, it's MY MOBRA, not theirs )
My column is a 1986 Thunderbird version, all new dealer type parts tho. It was nice to position the wheel for best comfort.

Doc,
I got a 1984 Fiero Tilt column in my Midstates (not a real Shelby Cobra), and it worked out well with not alot of fabricating. It has the tilt lever and the signal lever with Cruise, and yes, mine has cruise that works. But I don't have a real Cobra so I think it's OK to put in what ever makes you happy. Cause I sure ain't tryin' to make Leroy Happy!
My column has been in for 15yrs now and I have had no breakage as Fixit speaks of. It's easy to wire too. All you need is the GM slide clip connector that fits on the column and wire to that. When you buy it at the junkyard make sure you tell them to cut the wires long from the clip connector. Cost is about $75.

DOC,
We're less than an hour from you. Give us a call or stop in. 1-888-65Cobra. We've been making Tilt columns for cobras since early 90's. Unlike MrFixit's note, we've never knowingly had one break or come apart. IF it should we'll simply repair or replace for as long as you own the car.
The other and most serious consideration, as far as I know, we are the only ones that make it "collapsible" in either direction in case of impact.
We will need to know the length and mounting points that Shell Valley calls for.
DV...just another major safety issue addressed!
