Oil Pump Shaft

I have been running a Ford Racing High Volume pump in a small block in my Cobra for several hundred miles without pump drive shaft breakage. The pump came with what looks like a std hex drive shaft which was too long out of the box. I cut it down until the pump mount flange sat on the block OK. I don't race the car. Without a high strength shaft am I living on the edge? I'm running an MSD dist. and don't have a problem with gear breakage as some of the members have had, at least not yet! Has anybody run a stock shaft with this pump without problems?

The heavier the oil, the greater the stress on the shaft. My $0.02 worth.

The pump drive shaft is the weak link, for the additional expense which is very small, it would be very cheap insurance and give you good peace of mind. I always use them in my small block.
You can't have too much insurance...........

Bob in ct is correct.

I put a billet steel unit in, just to be safe.

It is very, very cheap insurance.

If you are running your engine and it breaks, it will most likely take the engine with it.

Thanks for the info guys. I kind of expected that I should change the pump shaft. That will give me something to do in this cold New England weather!
