New Cobra, Old dumb questions

So I just bought me a Cobra replica - have loved the car forever - now, I'm trying to figure out what I have.

How can you tell what size Holly 4-barrel it is?

How can you tell what gears are in the rear end (other than opening it up and measuring them?) I think they are too tall. I am taching around 2000@ 80 mph.

I'm not familiar with all this stuff, but I am mechanically inclined, and looking forward to the challenge of making this car "my own."

I'm not too far ahead of you. I just started pulling serial numbers off the carb and went to the Holley site. They have alot of info there, diagrams, manuals, etc.

For the gears, I understand you can jack up the car, rotate the wheels once and count the drive shaft revolutions. w/ 3.73's I guess mine should rotate 3.73 times for one tire revolution. Never done it though.

On the center of the carb body or the airhorn you will find a 5 digit number. Mine is an 80509. Go to the holley site and you can track it down there.

951Mat is correct about determining your gear ratio. Jack up the rear wheel, easier if you remove the wheel and tire, mark the disk or drum and also get one of the U-Joints where it is on top and the corner toward you and mark that corner. Then turn the wheel one full turn and count the times the drive line turns. Example, if it turns 3 1/2 times you have 350 gears or whatever your rear end uses in the 350/356 range.

2000 rpm at 80 mph? Sheessshhh, that aint a rear gear problem, I bet you've got a 5 speed with a .6 over drive. Typical of T5's and an often heard complaint here on Club Cobra....

I have 3:27 gears and a 5 speed with the .6 overdrive and I tach 1900 at 70 MPH. Almost worthless as I spend more time in 4th gear because of that high split and the great aerodynamics of these cars.

Now I can't seem to get the nut back on the air cleaner, the stud seems too short. But its good I looked under there, because I notice the chrome oil filler cap is missing. I love Cobra ownership.

While I am at it, can anyone tell me why you would have the breather on one bank feeding into the air cleaner, but not the other. Wouldn't it make sense to have a hose from each tee together then into the air cleaner?

Model 4160 carb with 600 CFM rating.

If it has not be changed, 64 primary jets and a #39 secondary metering plate and a 65 power valve.

The 2660 row of numbers is a date code.

I hear that they actually sell replacements for that at some kind of store. And if the car is underpowered (don't go), you can buy one with a nice shiny finish (chrome it).

P.S. I love my chrome ones. Mucho better than rust.
