Default IRS help

I have access to the IRS unit from an 89 Cougar with the 1.0 in dia axles my question is; is there a way to upgrade this unit to the 1.2 dia axle and spider gear or should I just look for the unit with the 1.2 Dia axles? Another question, will this unit(the 1.0 in) handle the power of a 250 hp 5.0 sbf ?
Thanks Carl.

I believe the unit with 1" axles is not a 8.8 but a 7 something not worth much. You should be able to find one easily just look for a model with a V8 and rear disk. Heck there are three at my You-Pull hangout right now. 8.8 is cast right in the pumkin for easy reference. Patrick

Thanks Patrick, I read that the 8.8 came both ways the one I found has something cast into the top but with the dirt and lack of room its hard to tell while its still in the car, I think the lookin will continue. Thanks again Carl.

You need to look for a TBird SC or a Cougar XR7. Those two have the correct components, including the axles. Other models may have the track lock and disc brakes, but those two have for sure. The auto equipped cars normally used a 3.27 ratio, and the manual cars normally used a 3.08. The 3.27 can be used as is, but I would recommend changing out the 3.08 to something a little more sporting. John
